Mixed message on binge drinking : Comments

By Jeremy Sammut, published 5/5/2008

The tax hike on pre-mixed drinks will yield $500 million for the next four years. That's a lot of money for a government with election promises to keep.

It appears to be a shabby tax grab.

Prices and taxes distract no drinkers from drinking nowhere-as naivety of absenteeism from anything but decreasing the production while keeping tax collecting intact.

Roxon

Is an idealogical twit.

If $500 mil is to be gained by increasing the tax doesn't that suggest they don't really belive the consumption rates won't fall.

Wrong, idiots, I am going to reduce their tax take by refusing to allow the consumption of mixes in my home where many young people socialise with my kids and they all buy burbon (fake whiskey) and rum mixes. Even my decision to reduce my consumption of rum and cola to zilch will have a significant impact on that $500 mil.

Bastards...

I don't believe there is a mixed message at all.
There is one simple message her ie the Government will be receiving lots more tax while pretending to have the interests of young people at heart.

Money for alcohol will be found. The best way to help curb the sale of these drinks is to cut the amount of alcohol that is in the drinks.

But this would cut the alcohol tax. Less alcohol would mean that it would take longer to get drunk. The drinker would then need to buy three or more times the amount they are drinking to-day.

This government so far is no better than the previous one.

The last post has it in one.

All that has to be done is lower the alcohol content.

More drinks will be bought to get that so desired drunken affect but meanwhile, they'd feel ultra sickly from all the sweet pop water that will water log the drinker as well!

Govt will be laughing; they'll rake in even more taxes on the sales.

Why is it then, young people have ?self esteem problems that meantime has them uncaring of what they are doing to their brains/wallets and friends (punch ups). Society has gone to the pack in some regards.
