Neoliberalism is the antithesis of a coherent, mutually supportive society, but its wild success recent times is due to the ruthless "leveraging" of any marketing advantage, regardless of ethical considerations.

It is to the advantage of the "faceless suits" for people to believe that their likeability and acceptance by a peer group is directly related to their employability. That way, people can be paid in social niceties rather than hard currency or respect. It is a system that appeals to the brace of corporate psychopaths who rise easily to the top of the business pyramid, and have no compunction about using people's self esteem as a tool for controlling them
