The Mersey Hospital was privatised by a previous State Liberal Government; and had the Labor government not bought it back, then there would have been even worse problems for the Mersey Hospital. The changes that the Labor Government are wanting to make generally have the support of the Doctor's Union (AMA).
The changes to the Mersey as proposed by the Labor Government have not as yet taken effect, and a new direction has now been pushed that will have the Mersey reverting back to how it was when it did not work. A huge issue has been the lack of Specialist Medical staff, meaning that those employed were being asked to maintain unsustainable workloads. If Mr. Howard can arrange to have more specialists employed that would be fabulous; however, as there is a shortage of specialist medical staff worldwide it is a very unlikely outcome.
Mr Howard's ad hoc plan is more than likely to prove to be a short term gain for Mr Howard, but create a long term pain for the Region in relation to Hospital resources. Decision making on the run; something which the Coalition government despised the Whitlam Government of.
