A rare alignment: the world stands ready, are the Palestinians? : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 2/10/2025

The question is, will the Palestinians seize this rare opportunity and adopt a new strategy critical to realizing their national goal?

"For how many more years must the Palestinians endure inhumanity and displacement, clinging to the false hope of the 'right of return' to their original homes in today's Israel?"

Our indigenous Australians are still peeved and hateful 200 years later and we ACTUALLY TRY to kind of make things better with them.
What makes you think the Palestinians will stop resenting you when you've been trying to exterminate them?
I wouldn't trust Israelis if I was a Palestinian, hell no.

"What the Palestinians need today is peace, security, economic stability, and hope for a better future, not empty promises of a better tomorrow that hinges on their "right of return," which can be addressed only through compensation and/or resettlement in their own homeland-the West Bank and Gaza."

A Jew telling us what the Palestinians need. [Rolls eyes]
Why don't we hear from Palestinians, and let them speak for themselves?
Israel killed them all that's why.

With the Quran and Hadiths littered with violent Anti-semitism. With Muslim children taught to hate Jews. With 7 October promised again and again.

How is Israel expected to trust those who unreservedly hate it ?

I will not hold my breath, following this latest opportunity for everyone to make a new start.

An awful lot of stars will have to align favourably to pull this one off, but it does seem like the Trump plan is the best prospect for lasting peace in Israel/Palestine for decades. It certainly beats the vacuous performative gesture of our own government “recognising” the non-existent state of Palestine.

I am emphatically not a Trump fan, but if he pulls this one off maybe he will deserve that Nobel peace prize after all.

Unusually for Alon’s recent essays, this one is also correct in identifying Palestinian intransigence as perhaps the biggest obstacle to lasting peace. The ball is now in their court. Let’s see what happens.

We're all being shocked and confused over and over again.
The 2 state solution is a 2 state delusion.
Anytime hope seemed at hand, Netanyahu stepped up the pace to thwart it.
Smotrich's 3000 homes in the E1 area of the West Bank effectively ends it.

You're all being fooled into thinking Israel and America cares.
They don't, they were both either dropping / providing the munitions.
The only people who care about the Palestinians are the Axis of Resistance.
Israel knows Hamas wont accept the deal and it will provide them some cover to continue to withhold food, water and medicine and collectively punish in order to pressure Hamas into a hostage release and also take Northern Gaza.

You want to know the truth about the hostages?
Hamas has been offering to give them all back since Oct 9 2023 in exchange for their own people, many held in administrative detention without charge and subject to rape and torture.

Israel refused to return the Palestinians.
They returned some, 600 were returned - the vast majority of which into Gaza.
And many of them have already been killed by bombs.
So returning the Palestinian hostages resulted in many of their deaths.

You should take this 'peace deal', the one proclaimed prior to any of the Palestinians having seen it with a grain of salt.

It feels like problem, reaction, solution; Hegelian dialectic.
Netanyahu may have allowed the attack to happen, the problem.
Then he killed hundreds of thousands of women and kids, the reaction.
And now they, the West presents you with the solution that they wanted in the first place.

Would you all have thought this was the best solution on October 6, 2023?
Or do you only think its the best solution after 2 years of western airstrikes?

This article's main underlying assumption is that the so-called "Palestinians" want an independent state of their own.

Sadly they do not.

I truly wish it was otherwise, that even if the "Palestinians" are not enthusiastic about it, they will at least agree, temporarily even if not forever, to have a state of their own in the West Bank (including Eastern Jerusalem as their capital) and Gaza. I would love to see such a state created, but alas, one can only lead a horse to the water, but not force it to drink.

There are quite a few people around the world, including in this very forum, who would never ever accept any Middle-East solution where Israel still exists, and some of whom would even be disappointed should any Israeli remains alive. That being the case for them who have no personal stake in Middle-Eastern affairs, how more so with "Palestinians" whose life itself and the lives of their families completely depends on Middle-East outcomes, yet prefer to die rather than allow Israel to live.

Dear Elizabeth,

«How is Israel expected to trust those who unreservedly hate it ?»

Israel is not expected to trust anyone, only to remain strong.
Holding onto the West Bank and Gaza only weakens Israel and make it crumble from within.

---

Dear Critic,

«Would you all have thought this was the best solution on October 6, 2023?»

The best solution is to abolish all states and nationalities (Australia included). Same before 2023, same now.
The question being is, what REALISTICALLY ACHIEVABLE solution is best under present circumstances.
