Zelensky, Trump, and the fate of Ukraine: a study in power, personality, and peril : Comments

By Yuri Koszarycz, published 24/2/2025

Three years into Russia's devastating war against Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky faces a challenge that may eclipse even the initial decision to stand and fight against Vladimir Putin

Of all the appalling things Trump has done in his first month in office, throwing Ukraine under a bus is arguably the worst, compounded by the sickening attempt to blackmail them into surrendering their critical minerals.

His bromance with Putin bodes very badly for the West and the world. Even Trump’s apologists at The Australian are starting to get nervous

I thought that Ukraine's surrender of its nuclear weapons came with security guarantees. Now Trump seems to be treating Ukraine's security like a protection racket. Still, I wouldn't discount free Ukraine becoming part of Nato as a peace deal. I cannot see how Russia would respect anything else.

Trump must stay. Zelensky should go, and he has offered to do so.

No matter who does what, Ukraine has nothing to do with Australia.

Trump threw Europe under the bus,
next he will throw Australia too down the gurgler (which just bravely, some would say recklessly, yesterday voted defiantly for Ukraine in the UN),
after that will come Taiwan (too expensive),
and he will finally, when least expected, throw Israel to the dogs as well
(which cowardly voted with its patron against Ukraine, that's why it would go down last, yet it will).

It is time for Europe to forget that this insignificant "United States of America" even exists and rise to defend itself by itself.
As for Australia, it could be too late, the Chinese navy is already here and be sure that America wouldn't care - nuclear India could be our last hope.

I feel like taking the mickey out of this stupid war.
So forgive me in advance for mocking all involved.
[satire]

I oppose Trumps efforts to make peace.
I think the war should continue, Ukrainians have a lower population, are less well trained and are dying in greater numbers.
The more the war continues eventually there will be no Ukrainian men left at all, and Russia can take everything.
The war should continue because a million dead Ukrainians just isn't enough.
The war should continue, because Europeans just love immigrants and conflict creates more displaced people which the average European has to pay for.
The war should continue, so that Ukraine continues to lose more territory to Russia.
The war should continue, so more widowed Ukrainian mothers can act as 'comfort women' for the Europeans for decades to come.
The West shouldn't send our kids to become peacekeepers, when Russia has stated they will be seen as enemy combatants, no.
We should deport all Ukrainians so they can be sent to the front themselves, as was previously suggested by the Ukrainian government who lack manpower, that way there won't be anyone to complain.
European and western leaders should themselves put on their military fatigues and lead the charge along with their own children.
The war should continue because it places more economic strain on Europe and will lead to economic collapse and civil war in western countries.
The war should continue so the bankers that have already purchased Ukraine's soverignty (the Ukrainians fight and die for nothing) get a return on their investment.
The war should continue because I think the Neo-Nazis make a great team.
The war should continue because it places a cost on global GDP and all the worlds people lose.
The war should continue because if it stops, Ukrainian grave diggers would be left without employment.

I think we should push this war further until we get into a nuclear conflict, because it seems like the most sensible course of action.

Stupid war.
