Bitter harvests: the Gaza ceasefire : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 21/1/2025

Incoming US President Donald Trump claimed the lion's share. And why not? With his inauguration on January 20, the timing of the ceasefire, with Israel finally relenting, was no coincidence.

Can there ever be complete and permanent peace in the middle East?
Probably not while ever Israel continues with its genocidal and expansionist policies against the Palestinians. It may be possible if the die hard orthodox segment of the Israeli population is prevented from continuing with their invasion, destroying and annexing of Palestinian territory.

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was repeatedly of the belief that Hamas had to be unconditionally defeated"

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has no belief whatsoever
His only concern is to stay out of jail, in power, and meet his family's financial high-maintenance demands.

One hypotheses is that he regained sufficient political popularity at this particular time as to not fear a fresh elections. This is why he allowed the cease-fire deal to come through at this time and not earlier.

"Netanyahu will remain bitter that his goals of eliminating Hamas have not been achieved."

He may put out a bitter face, but he would never be truly bitter because he never cared in the first place.

This whole Biden/Trump thing is irrelevant: all that happens in and around Israel is the sole product of internal Israeli politics!

Dear Ateday,

«Can there ever be complete and permanent peace in the middle East?»

No, because nothing in this world is permanent.
And no worldly peace is complete either.

But well, 100-200 years of relative peace is a real possibility that I pray for.

«It may be possible if the die hard orthodox segment of the Israeli population is prevented from continuing with their invasion, destroying and annexing of Palestinian territory.»

Israel's occupation is anything but orthodox.

According to orthodox Judaism, The Jewish people will eventually be redeemed, forgiven and their exile ended, but that is in the hands of God and it is sinful to attempt to grab the land of Israel by force. Nobody can tell when redemption will happen, but it always WILL happen, always in the future, always prayed for.

The strange idea as if Israel, a civil/secular state and its expansion, has any religious significance, goes straight in the face of Jewish orthodoxy.

The writer mentions Hamas 6 times.

They appear to be as pure as the driven snow.

Besides himself, who is the writer trying to kid with this article?
