I agree that a two-state solution looks the only way to resolve this conflict in the long term. But the idea that Penny Wong and others seem to be promulgating is that if the rest of the world recognises both Israel and a Palestinian “state”, that will solve the problem. It won’t. Palestine at the moment looks nothing like a “state”, and it will take more than wishful thinking to make it one. Even if something like a state emerges from the ashes of the current conflict, unless Israel and Palestine agree to peacefully coexist, Palestinian statehood could lock in perpetual conflict for more generations to come. Mutual recognition is essential. Without it, we may get two states, but there will be no solution.
