Celebrating 140 years of the Fabians : Comments
By John Töns, published 18/3/2024It can be argued that the early Fabians may have been naïve. For although 'democracy' has seemingly triumphed it has, thanks to neo-liberalism, become the handmaiden of global capitalism.

140 years and what have they to show for it? It would seem they have rolled over and begged for a tummy rub.
Their influence has changed little. Dig a hole in the sand, then take a bucket and pour the ocean into it. 140 years! Need I say more? If they would influence or usher in democratic change, they need a white knight with very deep pockets. To counter the very deep pockets of those who have sort to buy or influence the political class. Inasmuch as you do unto the least among you. you also do unto me. Conservatism and Christianity are mutually incompatible philosophies. And Conservatives have a record of transferring corporate tax responsibilities and other costs onto those with the least. All while the (paper tigers) ineffectual Fabians watched on and said or did little that changed much. Intellectuals do little more than wax lyrical and then wonder why little changes. Change happens when activists get on the ball and push change into being. And as difficult as pushing s-it uphill. Capitalism is the best system we have, but not the current dog eat dog version, but cooperative capitalism comrade. Alan B. Posted by Alan B., Monday, 18 March 2024 10:13:30 AM

Hi Alan B.
"Capitalism is the best system we have, but not the current dog eat dog version, but cooperative capitalism comrade." 'cooperative capitalism comrade' - You mean like in Russia? Agricultural consumer cooperatives in Russia: state and prospects for development http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1755-1315/677/2/022043/meta "In the Russian Federation, small business cooperation in rural areas plays an important social role, and the state provides great support to the development of cooperation. The paper provides an analysis of the state and areas of development of agricultural consumer cooperatives at the federal and regional levels. The analysis has showed that, against the background of a decrease in the number of agricultural consumer cooperatives, their consolidation and an increase in fixed assets are taking place." Meeting with employees of Rossiya Agricultural Cooperative http://en.kremlin.ru/catalog/keywords/44/events/45928/photos While on a working trip to Stavropol Territory, Vladimir Putin visited the Rossiya Agricultural Cooperative, where he watched the barley harvest in progress and spoke with the business’ employees. Cooperative Sector in Russia and the Implementation of the ILO Recommendation No.193 in the Development of Different Russian Cooperative Trends http://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/---europe/---ro-geneva/---sro-moscow/documents/publication/wcms_249167.pdf Funny how you think some countries have it all backwards; Then you realise we're the ones who have it backwards, right Alan B. As for the wolves in sheeps clothing... UBI's not the answer, it's a handout not a handup. Posted by Armchair Critic, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 6:14:06 AM

The author presents a revolutionary idea:
"The challenge is to manage and facilitate the collation of the community input to the discussions and record their feedback and responses that is meaningful for policy makers." This dreamer actually thinks that it is possible for ordinary people like us to influence politicians - that is UNPRECEDENTED! Posted by Yuyutsu, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 6:37:24 AM

As for Fabianism: well, Gough Whitlam adhered to that and, like the Voice, he was well and truly dispensed with.
