To fix healthcare, doctors need to take a really good look in the mirror : Comments

By Aseem Malhotra, published 12/3/2024

The consequences of commercial influence on health policy for society are devastating. Prescribed drugs continue to be one of the leading causes of death globally after heart disease and cancer.

Mostly agree with this. Any diagnosis, needs to be tested with blood work, X rays etc. Except when we are dealing with a killer virus/pandemic! Then it's vaccinate, vaccinate. And if there are any unknown underlying health issues, vaccinate.

The author states:

"A nationalised health system provides better quality care at a lower cost. Conversely, a commercialised healthcare system does the opposite, as best demonstrated by the United States which has the largest healthcare expenditure of the industrialised nations with the worst health outcomes. A marketised healthcare system ensures greater vulnerability to exploitation of the rich and the poor."

An excellent point.

At the moment we are drifting towards a hybrid system.

It is expensive to get medical care now.

I want the better care provided by a nationalised health system.

I want to be able to choose my own doctor so that he/she shares my own values.

I want to be the one and only to decide whether or not the doctor I choose is qualified for the task. And even if I happen to make a mistake, that is my own body, nobody else's and nobody else should claim that to be their problem or business.

I want my doctor to be loyal to me, not to any state, government, bureau or any other organisation.

And this is naturally only possible when I employ my doctor myself and pay him/her directly from my own pocket.

Medical services are presently expensive, to the extent that I need to think twice whether or not to have a particular test or treatment, but that is precisely because when paying the doctors (and for other medical services) I have to compete with the easy money that government pays the doctors and their guild.
