Libelled by the bot: reputation, defamation and AI : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 26/4/2023

The question here is whether ChatGPT's supposedly defamatory imputations might fall within the realm of liability. The bot's functionality on generating facts is currently sketchy, and any user should be familiar with that fact.

I had to look up 'bot' and 'chatGPT' to see want they meant. The more more technology, the more gobbledegook, the worse society gets.

An out of control automatic rumour mongering machine…what a brilliant invention.

So the old girls rumour mongering over the side fence on washing day are under the pump…haw haw haw.

Rumor mongering is a violation of Federal Security laws in the US…and in Australia?

The curse of conjugations. It’s violation of US “securities” laws not security laws.

So BC’s example here is a use of rumor mongering for political purposes, whereas, the violation of securities laws, is better guarded by laws against the application of rumor mongering.

Bad headline writing here: ChatGPT is (allegedly) slandering not libelling.
Libelling is publishing the output, which the bot does not do.

If you own the technology and do not correct errors it makes, then I believe you are liable. And the same as ignorance is no defence for law breakers!
