Libelled by the bot: reputation, defamation and AI : Comments
By Binoy Kampmark, published 26/4/2023The question here is whether ChatGPT's supposedly defamatory imputations might fall within the realm of liability. The bot's functionality on generating facts is currently sketchy, and any user should be familiar with that fact.

These programs will probably prompt many to post information about themselves on the web that subsequently becomes a personal security issue. One item highlighted here is the borderless nature of the internet- something that may need to be remedied. Language still creates borders between different cultures and exploitation but this is also being broken down through AI. Tools can be powerful but they can also hurt or maim or even kill the user- don't slip with your chisel! Many famous last words in this space.

Try Eliza here...

So ChatGPT in a sense isn't new- but it's a bit scary. Also there are similar programs that create graphics, etc based on search terms.
The name Eliza was based on the character "Eliza Doolittle" from Irishman George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion the 1938 film Pygmalion, the 1956 musical "My Fair Lady" and its 1964 film version.

Eliza is apparently considered as one of the first computer programs to satisfy the Turing Test of artificial intelligence.
The article from Forbes below talks about ChatGPT and similar programs- the Deep Nostalgia program looks interesting-
"Deep Nostalgia- Do you have historic family photographs of distant relatives or ancestors who you’d like to see in motion? This innovative tool lets you animate the faces in family photos so you can see them smile, blink, and laugh, just as if you had recorded a video of them back in the day."
