Yes, an amicable separation is a far better way to end a relationship where the two parties can no longer "stomach" one another.

The kids need to be told it wasn't their fault. That marriages sometime fail and for myriad reasons.

Best to resolve the issue as above and move on. And if that's not possible move away and start again somewhere else.

Anger and bitterness never ever improves outcomes or mental wellbeing!

Divorce in Australia does not require a legal settlement.
Any of the sides, or both, can apply for divorce papers once they were living apart for one year. If children are involved then the registrar needs to be satisfied that there is a child-maintenance agreement in place (but property-settlement is not required): if both together verbally declare that they have agreed, then that will suffice.

I had probably the most painless divorce ever.

I married a Ballet Choreographer, when we were both in Sydney for a while. She was usually flitting around the world on contracts, keeping me wrapped around her little finger. We went for a cruise up to the reef on my yacht, & once in Cairns could see no reason to go back. We headed out into the pacific islands.

We had a great time, & I developed a little business building jetties for remote plantations. We were doing well, & had lots of fun spare time.

Then she was offered a 3 month contract in Sydney, too exciting for her to refuse. Off she went, to be back in 3 months. 3 months became 6 then 12 months, then even more. I decided to go back to Oz to see what was happening.

I was in Honiara preparing for the coral sea, always a nasty bit of water in my experience, crossing to Cairns when I got the letter telling I was divorced. I didn't know it could happen like that. I went back to building jetties.

A few years later, when I returned to Oz, she tried to contact me a few times. I didn't respond. I was finally over her by then, & didn't want to take a chance of being re-infected.
