Hashemite Kingdom of Palestine: Gantz - de Gaulle or de Goose? : Comments

By David Singer, published 2/9/2022

Two statements made this past week by Israel's current Defence Minister– Benny Gantz – could see his run for Israel's next Prime Minister ended after it has just started.

The motley lot of naysayers here are obviously upset that the prospect of ending the 100 years-old conflict between Arabs and Jews could come to an end if this Saudi Plan is successfully implemented.

Pity.

You think every decent person would want to see an end to the conflict - not seek to perpetuate it.

Dear David,

I notice that you moderated your words:

Until now you persistently spoke of some imaginary "100-years old Arab-Jewish conflict". Now in your reply to Pete you referred instead to "the 100 years-old conflict between Arabs and Jews".

This is getting somewhat closer to the facts:
there indeed is an about 100-year conflict in Israel, mainly between SOME who happen to be Arabs and SOME who happen to be Jews. This conflict does not in any way involve all Arabs nor all Jews, in fact not even the majorities of either. Further, some (though a minority) among the conflicted sides are not even Arabs or Jews.

This is one of many conflicts in the Middle East, by far not the most serious or dangerous one - that even before mentioning other long and more dangerous (and nuclear) conflicts elsewhere such as Russia-Ukraine, India-Pakistan and China-Taiwan/Japan.

It would be nice to see that conflict ended, but not at any cost, certainly not at the cost of the destruction of Israel, which is exactly what would happen should the Saudi scheme be accepted.

But well, perhaps that wouldn't bother you... I can't see why it would bother Shihabi either if Israel went off the map!
