However, I believe that the use of "invasion" and "genocide" for the colonisation of Aus is hyperbole much like the boats under labor was an invasion or pregnancy termination is genocide.

I note that the commentary here is incredibly overheated, which as principally a science blogger I'm not much used to, so I'll largely ignore it. I agree though with one commentator that this is a rather silly piece, though perhaps not the silliest ever written on this site. I can't judge that.
I pointed out why before - that the past is another country, and if you're going to accuse Darwin of a lack of recognition of the value of native Australians, Americans and other indigenes, and remove their place-names, then you need also to include James Cook, Arthur Phillip, Matthew Flinders and just about every other Britisher who encountered the first Australians of the early nineteenth century, with their spears and dilly bags, and lack of 'decent' clothing, and concluded that they weren't 'civilised'. They would have had no idea of how these people had managed to thrive for tens of thousands of years in such an unpromising environment.
Even those who only heard stories of these people, back home in Britain, would've used the term 'savage'. It was standard. Using this author's logic, such places as Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart, to name just a few, would have to be changed, to remove the stain of British racist arrogance. And to assert our smug superiority over those outdated ignoramuses.

Thank you individual , I knew you would squib it. Like so many virtue signaling anti racists you do not even know why you believe that all races must be equal. It is just an article of faith to you. It is just like asking a religious fundamentalist to explain how he thinks that the universe was created ion six days? They don't think they even have to. All they tell me to do is to do BELIEVE, BELIEVE, BELIEVE.

The problem for you is that I don't have any problem at all discussing this subject. I actually get amused by the fact that so many of my anti racist opponents get so emotional and angry over an opinion that they are convinced must be correct, but which they can not even write 350 words to explain.

My opinion is that anti racism has been taught to you for so long, that just like a person born in a deeply religious household, you accept without question and don't even want to think that your sacred ideology might be wrong.

Hi Bronwyn. Have you not heard about "the good Nazi" John Rabe? Recently, the Germans even made a German language movie about him called 'The Good Nazi."

John Rabe was a Nazi Party member who owned an industrial complex in Nanking, China. When the Japanese army attacked Nanking and began raping and murdering hundreds of thousands of Chinese, Rabe surrounded his fenced off industrial complex with swastika flags and herded as many Chinese inside the fence as he could. The Japanese did not know what to do as Nazi Germany was their ally, so they did not enter the complex and continue raping and killing.

The number of lives John rabe saved is not known. Estimates range from 30,000 to 200,000.

Anyhoo, after the war, Rabe and his family were back in Germany. Because he had ben a Nazi party member, the allied ocupation commission refused him permission to work. John Rabe and his family were reduced to eating grass seeds to stop themselves starving to death.

Somehow, the Chinese government of Chiang kai Shek learned of the Rabe family's plight and they made a generous cash donation to John Rabe the Nazi for saving so many Chinese lives.
