Spiked concerns: the Melbourne coronavirus lockdown : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 10/7/2020

Before journalists had time to file, or arm chair warriors time to muster their thoughts, the coronavirus beast had gotten away from an Australian state that had prided itself in reining in numbers and playing the game of suppression.

Something else that disturbs me about this virus is not just how slowly our governments react to it but how ill prepared some people are.

It was just two days into Victoria's current housing apartments lock-down before some of the residents started complaining about running out of food. I would like to think that even in the good times almost everyone would be sensible enough to have more than 2 days supply of non-perishable food in the cupboard for unforeseen events. But here in the middle of a global pandemic it is surely stupidity not to have more than 2 days of food- especially given that it was obvious even to many of us living in other states that parts of Melbourne were heading down a path that would require heavy government intervention to fix.

Only someone who has been living under a rock or an inveterate liar would claim that the cock up in Victoria is because of Morrison calling for a relaxation of lock down. The 3 main reasons being:

1 The main cause of the outbreak is well documented and even admitted to by Labor in being the shoddy job done by the state government in the management isolation and quarantine facilities.
2 Bubonic Dan has never followed Morrison's recommendations
3 Despite every other state relaxing lockdown faster than plague ridden Victoria, every other state has a far lower infection rate.

Secondly, vaccines haven't been made from dead viruses for many years, and flu vaccines are generally only partially successful as they are usually made based on a previous generation. However, they do provide a level of protection against catching the new version and typically reduce the severity of the infection.

As the present corona virus has only 2 versions, a vaccine would be close to 100% effective against these versions and provide some protection against future mutation.

"Victorian health authorities have confirmed a link between two COVID-19 cases in people who attended the Black Lives Matter protest in Melbourne’s CBD just over a month ago, and the cluster of at least 242 cases in public housing towers in the city’s inner northwest.

But the Department of Health and Human Services has refused to say whether members of the cluster, which includes the protest attendees, live in the public housing towers.

DHHS says it has still not established the source of any of the interlinked clusters, with Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton on the record expressing scepticism that the protesters caught the virus at the rally.

The confirmation of the link follows 10,000 people attending the June 6 rally. The event went ahead after the Andrews government and DHHS advised people to “consider other ways to show support” for the Black Lives Matter cause, but backed a Victoria Police decision not to issue fines to those who attended."
