Spiked concerns: the Melbourne coronavirus lockdown : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 10/7/2020

Before journalists had time to file, or arm chair warriors time to muster their thoughts, the coronavirus beast had gotten away from an Australian state that had prided itself in reining in numbers and playing the game of suppression.

"Armed police". Is this bloke suggesting that police should be disarmed to deal with hot hotheaded immigrants "with a less than sympathetic disposition to the boys and girls in blue" (his own admission).

The tower block situation is as much a problem as the pandemic itself, highlighting the dangers of multiculturalism, tribalism and the confining of certain categories of people into large colonies.

Everything wrong with Victoria, the stupid electing of an extreme socialist government with and even more extreme leader who thinks its a good idea to do deals with the Chinese Communist Party, has blown up at once.

Our loose-mouthed Prime Minister's idiotic "we are all Melburnians now" is a shocking insult to the rest of Australia.

I love it, when as usual, I'm right once more.
I explained the logic of letting the virus "run rampant", as someone colorfully described, but Vic is just a small example of the fact that this virus will not simply go away by everyone isolating or quarantining.
It will get those who are susceptible, whether sooner or later.
Even if a vaccine is forthcoming, I am skeptical about it's ability to perform as required, either in intensity or in it's effectiveness.
You might stand a chance if you live in the bush and kill/grow/forage your own food, or basically, not have ANY contact with people or places where people have been or go.
If the people in the towers are pissed off, imagine how they would feel if they had to live in the bush and go all Robinson Crusoe?

Well, how predictable for a jubilant, celebrating (blame gaming) Greg Sheridan to be blaming Danial Andrews for the non-compliance of folk that the right-wing press was reporting as a giant conspiracy or fake news.

And just because we have been hugely successful in our suppression strategy, we will have to continue to socially distance and observe good hygiene, however bothersome that may be for some lazy or seriously stupid individuals. Until if and or when we get a vaccine!

This covid-19 has already claimed more casualties than 2 world wars with a death toll as high as 5%. And it hasn't gone away!

So, follow the advice of the experts, not that of dumb as, political enthusiasts!

And wear a mask if social distancing is not doable.

Don't be afraid to tell the occasional dumb bum that closing up in the queues doesn't make them advance any quicker! Nor does complaining about social distancing. It's just not hard to do!

Understand that the evidence is that up to 80% of the cross infections are spread by aerosol droplets. And that a sneeze can send these droplets up to 30 feet away. And that where masks are used, that cross-infection is reduced by up to 80%? And the risk is further reduced by good hand hygiene!

Music can assist with your mental health! Anything that gets you on your feet and moving with the rhythm or singing along! Worry about what you can control and nothing else, ok.

Take care and stay safe.

Surprised no one is talking about the elephant in the room. These outbreaks are directly linked to Muslim communities ignoring Covid19 restrictions. The issue isnt a "language" barrier, its a cultural one.

The main problem with this virus is our general approach to tackling it. Our strategies are reactive and not offensive/proactive. We let the thing build steam before we are bothered enough to do anything that will be effective in combatting it.

For example, we had a couple of months between the initial lockdowns of China and our lockdowns. We should have locked down our borders and implemented testing/tracing straight after the Wuhan lockdown because it was obvious to anybody who thought about it that whatever the virus is it must be bad. When a country like China, which prioritizes growing its economy above most else (above human rights for example) locks down then the virus should have been perceived as a very serious threat. But instead the government fluffed around with a wait-and-see approach and reacted with weak partial border restrictions and ridiculous notions that the public will be sensible enough to self-isolate.

But worse still, after our painful lock-downs we open up a bit. But the Victorian public loses the plot and proceeds to undo all its work all while the Victorian government lets it happen! It was blatantly obvious weeks ago that Victoria had a real problem; in fact people were making fun of the fact eg. https://twitter.com/liltelfeee/status/1274259695771901955/photo/1 especially note the date: 20/6/2020- which is three weeks ago. The Victorian Government let it spiral out-of-control until finally doing something substantial about it two days ago.

[from above]

And today we have a perfect example of complacency and non-preemptive/non-anticipatory behaviour. At midday, the morons in the Queensland government have proceeded with its schedule and opened its border with NSW. Now what they should have done is delay this for at least a week (but still open the borders with the other states that it did). Because they should be thinking ahead and reason that NSW will by now quite possibly have cases originally caused Victorians that are not reported/detected yet since there has been travel between these two states during the current Victoria disaster but before the new Victorian lockdowns were introduced. An offensive play would have been to cancel our planned NSW border re-opening and delay it at least enough to properly assess the prevalence of the virus in NSW due to Victorians that entered pre-lockdown.

We need to change our overall approach. We should proactively manage the virus to cut it off before it does anything and not continually be chasing it and reacting to the damage it has already done. For example, at the first sign of a new virus outbreak we should go straight to top-stage hard lock downs of the region which then ease to lower restrictions. We should NOT go from minimal restrictions which we escalate up: climbing from low to high restrictions lets the virus escape and run wild.

[PS- I'll make a prediction: Qld will in the next few weeks have cases originating from people entering from NSW which were directly or indirectly infected from Victoria.]

Thanks to Bubonic Dan Locked-down Victoria will be hammered by up to 500 new cases of COVID-19 every day by the end of next week — with infections doubling every five days — unless the disastrous coronavirus outbreak is checked, exclusive modelling for The Weekend Australian shows.

The confronting scenario emerged on Friday as Victoria reported the biggest daily spike in cases since the pandemic erupted, with 288 more people testing positive to the virus.

First, the right-wing press/political enthusiasts, tell all and sundry it's fake news a leftie conspiracy, Convince the dumb anti-social imported minority? Then attack Andrews, when there is a second wave. In jubilant celebration of expected electoral success as a result of extremely effective blame-shifting? And willful blindness!

As for predictions of more outbreaks in Q'ld and elsewhere? Well, the virus hasn't gone away, nor the dumb asses spreading it with all manner of non-compliant anti-social behaviour and illegal border hopping?

I mean in some places, (redneck) folk were rioting rather than comply with an official edict to wear medical face masks!

Do you think they're so dumb that they weren't aware that their non-compliance created possibly lethal risks for their fellow citizens? Or lungs damaged enough to manifest as a fatigue syndrome? I mean, all your bodily functions/operations/movement/vitality/brainpower, relies on a good supply of oxygen!

Thinkabit, if you look back a bit, you'll see where I proposed a total shutdown and locked and bolted abut 2 weeks, to kill the thing dead in its tracks and predicted that the USA would become the new epicentre. Even as others were saying it was just a new flu, I was saying it was a pandemic going somewhere to happen.

Our own complacency (it's just a new flu) was the reason it wasn't stopped far sooner! There was a comedy of errors and keystone cops/border control allowing cruise ships to disembark their entire passenger lists, untested! And spread throughout the entire continent Even as we understood, the entire Italian pandemic was started by a single Asymptomatic Chinese tourist!

And there is an alleged "ethenic cohort" that is willfully practising civil disobedience? And a Jubilant (we as right) right-wing press claiming conspiracy theories etc. And as such as conspiracies, done to harm the economy/the stock market/the indolent privileged rich?

But hey let's be fair! Without question, all of the above is down to Chairman, Danial Andrews? Talk about objectivity!

Victoria seemed to be the role model in controlling the spread of the WuFlu until Scott Morrison insisted that it get out from under the doona, open its borders, get people back into the offices and factories, and open the schools.

I assume Daniel Andrews was trying to placate Scott Morrison when he complied and now look what's happened. Maybe Canberra can send Morrison down to Melbourne to try to shake a few hands and tell everyone things will be alright just like he did at Cobargo.

So you agree with me that it was Scott Morrison's insistence on removing Victoria's restrictions that has resulted in this second wave of the WuFlu pandemic in Victoria.

yep the sooner people wake up to the fact you can't stay in a padded cell all your life the better. How 'dumb' are the 'experts'. What, over a million deaths from hunger this year and about 20 from Coronavirus in Australia. Wake up, you have been duped.

runner,

We can get rid of hunger. We cannot get rid of the WuFlu.

There is no vaccine and might never be one.

One does not build up antibodies to WuFlu if one gets it; it progressively destroys parts of the lungs each time one gets it until the lungs are so damaged that at some point another infection of WuFlu is fatal.

For example, someone 25 years of age gets it then say gets it again average every second year and is dead at 40. Each infection reduces life expectancy.

Without a vaccine, funeral suits might soon become a fashion accessory again.

Mr Opinion,
For crying out loud, we're unable to weed out stupidity so, we've got Buckley's to weed out the above.
And, to your first question no, I don't agree with Morrison but neither do I agree with the likes of you who don't feel affected by the lock-downs & really only care about yourselves.
Virus aside, people need to get about to earn money whereas the likes of you don't because you're not engaged in meaningful & productive work but get paid anyway !
Isn't it the likes of you who promote willy nilly immigration by unskilled & therefore unproductive migrants who you were hoping would do the menial work you think yourself to educated for to perform ?
Invariably, the ball always seems to fall back into your leftist court !

Mr Opinion.

Good call and right on the money. As for getting people back to work? Some already work from home! And given life and work practises may never ever be able to return to a pre=pandemicc normal? Other ways may be needed.

Some countries can and have forced sick people to work! And in some, slavery is still practised and sanctioned.

The Alfred showed that several health workers were infected! And quarantine was managed, it seems by private security, some of who were allegedly having sexual relations with their charges?

Then we wonder why there's a second wave?

Getting the economy going again relies on eliminating the virus here and not allowing it to return. Ethenic minorities who won't comply, but are actively engaged in spreading a highly contagious pathogen, need to be quarantined/detained in some offshore facilities, say, the now unused refugee centre on Christmas Island? Globalism may never return or be possible?

Getting the economy and production going again? May need to be done from inside covid-19 fee bubbles or as piece work folk can do from home.

Some research I've heard about is giving good reports to a new nasal spray developed here, as a treatment, rather than a vaccine.

Flu vaccines are usually not that effective, given dead viruses contribute some viral protein for the vaccines, which does not seem to produce a strong antibody response! And the virus could replicate SARS and infect over a billion worldwide. So there could be a way to go yet?

AS far a the economy is concerned, you need a healthy population to have a healthy economy! And that's never going to happen when the willfully blind and the pathetic, politically manipulated, conspiracy theorists etc, are non-compliant!

Just want it to go away with wishful thinking or whips? Go figure?

Lots of evidence that shows people produce antibodies and that also the positive results weeks after infection has apparently ceased is the body expelling the depleted virus and is not contagious nor a reinfection Suggest you do a bit of reading instead of just making stuff up.

Something else that disturbs me about this virus is not just how slowly our governments react to it but how ill prepared some people are.

It was just two days into Victoria's current housing apartments lock-down before some of the residents started complaining about running out of food. I would like to think that even in the good times almost everyone would be sensible enough to have more than 2 days supply of non-perishable food in the cupboard for unforeseen events. But here in the middle of a global pandemic it is surely stupidity not to have more than 2 days of food- especially given that it was obvious even to many of us living in other states that parts of Melbourne were heading down a path that would require heavy government intervention to fix.

Only someone who has been living under a rock or an inveterate liar would claim that the cock up in Victoria is because of Morrison calling for a relaxation of lock down. The 3 main reasons being:

1 The main cause of the outbreak is well documented and even admitted to by Labor in being the shoddy job done by the state government in the management isolation and quarantine facilities.
2 Bubonic Dan has never followed Morrison's recommendations
3 Despite every other state relaxing lockdown faster than plague ridden Victoria, every other state has a far lower infection rate.

Secondly, vaccines haven't been made from dead viruses for many years, and flu vaccines are generally only partially successful as they are usually made based on a previous generation. However, they do provide a level of protection against catching the new version and typically reduce the severity of the infection.

As the present corona virus has only 2 versions, a vaccine would be close to 100% effective against these versions and provide some protection against future mutation.

"Victorian health authorities have confirmed a link between two COVID-19 cases in people who attended the Black Lives Matter protest in Melbourne’s CBD just over a month ago, and the cluster of at least 242 cases in public housing towers in the city’s inner northwest.

But the Department of Health and Human Services has refused to say whether members of the cluster, which includes the protest attendees, live in the public housing towers.

DHHS says it has still not established the source of any of the interlinked clusters, with Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton on the record expressing scepticism that the protesters caught the virus at the rally.

The confirmation of the link follows 10,000 people attending the June 6 rally. The event went ahead after the Andrews government and DHHS advised people to “consider other ways to show support” for the Black Lives Matter cause, but backed a Victoria Police decision not to issue fines to those who attended."
