A politics of deceit: Israel and US annexation of Palestinian lands : Comments

By Stuart Rees, published 26/6/2020

In response to Israel's intention to annex up to 30% of the West Bank, respect for truth, by all the parties involved, Israeli, Palestinian, US, European and Australian, has been replaced by calculations about the benefits of deceit.

An annexation by Israel of territory in the West Bank might be coordinated with Trump's reelection priorities.

Collusion between Netanyahu and the Trump Administration is possible. This is in the sense that if the annexation is launched before the US November Presidential Election this may well amount to a crisis that will benefit Trump.

If there is a violent Palestinian reaction to the annexation then footage of violent demonstrations, Israeli tanks and airstrikes will tend to make Americans anxious. Broader Arab national opposition may well boost the price of oil hurting the American voter’s hip pocket.

President Trump can wade into the crisis by “brokering” peace – really in favour of Israel. Meanwhile many undecided US voters may rally round the President, as they often do in times of tension.

It might help to realise that twenty-first century democracy requires a secular state. A Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish or Muslim state cannot also be a democracy. If two people want to get married they should be able to do so without the intervention of clergy. There should be a public school system where children of different religious and ethnic backgrounds can grow up together, learn together and live together as adults. There should be separation of religion and state. Neither the state nor religion should use the other to enforce its control. The constitution of Australia in S. 116 states there should be no religious test for public office. Section 116 states: “The Commonwealth shall not make any law for establishing any religion, or for imposing any religious observance, or for prohibiting the free exercise of any religion, and no religious test shall be required as a qualification for any office or public trust under the Commonwealth.” If the Israeli Constitution adopted a similar provision it would cease to a Jewish state and be on the road to becoming a democracy. One state with equal rights for all is better than two states hating each other.

Israel has its democratic faults and must defend itself.

But the large dictatorships around it: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran and Turkey are FAR WORSE.

The simple fact is that the whole Mesopotamian area was Christian,
Jewish and Zoroastrian until the Arab invasion, inspired by Mohammad's
zeal for his invented religion, in the 8th century.
Before that the Arabs lived mainly in Arabia.
To pretend that the contested areas are Moslem lands is to accept the
verses of the Koran that says that any land once occupied by Moslems
remains Moslem land forever.

That is the crux of Arab claim on Israeli land.
It is not unique to Israel, it applies to Portugal and Spain also.
Indeed if you look into it more closely you will find that those
countries are included in lists of Islamic countries.
You can add, Sicily, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and parts of Austria.
Islamists claim all those countries are rightfully moslem lands.
Even the Turkish President recently made noise about Andalusia. (Spain)
The Turks of course occupied Greece.
So, when Israel claims those areas where Jews previously lived long
before Mohammad arrived on the scene they are applying the Islamic priciple.

Bazz wrote 'inspired by Mohammad's zeal for his invented religion'

All religions are invented. All religions are human fantasies.
