The moral devastation of the continued occupation : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 21/2/2020

Contrary to Prime Minister Netanyahu's assertion, the occupation erodes rather than buttresses Israel's national security and cannot be justified on either security or moral grounds.

This again?

Fair dinkum, its like people, in 1946, discussing whether Poland invaded Germany before Germany invaded Poland.

It just doesn't matter any more. Make these 'moral' arguments all you want. The same people will agree and the same people will demur.

But Israel isn't going to pull back from its current borders no matter how often its called for.

The current borders ARE the borders.

As usual the Palestinians and their western advocates demand that which they could only get by annihilating the Jewish state, and that's not going to happen either.

Most of the world and the more important M-E states have moved on. The Saudis and the like need to befriend Israel and the peace plan gives cover for that. They've abandoned the Palestinians who were only ever a pawn in the game anyway.

The Palestinian leadership is happy with the current arrangement because it keeps them in power and wealth. And the Iranians like it because they need all the allies, no matter how weak, they can get.

But the Palestinians have lost. They won't get the West Bank back and they just need to understand that Trump's deal is the best they'll get. They rejected it without even knowing what it was. The next offer will be worse again.

Rarely has a people been led for such a long period by leaders who are so adept at failing.

Dear Mhaze,

Yes, the Palestinians lost - but what has this to do with the issue?

Israel is devastated from within by this 1967 occupation: let the Palestinians go to hell, but why should the Israelis suffer that much?

How about, in your view, if Israel allowed the Jewish settlers to remain in the West Bank under their own flag (as some of them suggested themselves to establish the State of Judah), so it can itself be rid of this curse? There are that many Muslim states already, so why not have two Jewish states to solve this painful problem?
