Shortwave cuts could cost lives : Comments

By Ian Nance, published 7/8/2018

One of the most critical aspects of Radio Australia is its ability to serve as a counter-emergency alerting and information system for natural disasters or civil disturbance.

It is a good while now since shortwave was dropped, with zero effect for 99.9% of people. Nance can say “rubbish” as loudly and as often as he likes. SW is obsolete technology of interest only to obsolete people. Ditto the ABC and Radio Australia, funded by taxpayers who never listened to it.

ttbn,
Inability to use, or even afford, the latest equipment does not make people obsolete. AM radio, whether short, medium or long wave, may appear obsolete but its simplicity brings great advantages in reliability as well as cost.

Informing people overseas of what's really going on, countering the propaganda of repressive regimes, is a very good use of Australian taxpayers' money - especially considering how little it costs!

Yes sure Ian, but if you cut critical funding? Already cut to the proverbial bone, something has to give or go!

It's a question of POLITICAL priorities and the (coal-fired) boneheaded numbskulls making them!

Imagine what we could truly afford with power prices as low as 2 cents or less per KwH.

Especially when the national broadcaster uses so much of it. Enough over the whole of this wide brown land to light up a small town!?

Imagine that power bill? I kid you not!
