A woman’s body, a woman’s choice, a woman’s fault : Comments

By Wendy Francis, published 13/4/2017

Miss X proceeded with the abortion but was so troubled that she could not keep the money. She has donated to World Vision, UNICEF, and to an orphan fund at Welfare Aid International.

"But in the case of ‘Miss X’, paid $50,000 in ‘go away’ money by Panthers star Bruce Cartwright, the choice about whether her 16-week old foetus lived or died was all his."

no it wasn't.

Anyone can pay a woman to ‘go away’ provided they have the money. Anyone can use power to try and influence a woman to have an abortion. This is not about men behaving badly it is about men using the money and power they have to achieve the desired outcomes they want. This is the way the world works and if you don’t like the way the world works then you should do something to change the balance of power in society so that it is not based on money or fame.

It is easy to make this a gender issue since it is impossible for women to use their power and influence to make a man have an abortion. Women abuse power and money as much as men do but it shows bitterness to single out some action that only men can be guilty of.

The author’s problem is with power and influence and has nothing to do with abortion. She does not like the fact that men can have power. Whatever the rights and wrongs about abortion some men will always have more power than other men and women. She needs to come to terms with that basic reality. If she was really concerned about the plight of the woman she would help her to see that she has the power to choose whether or not she continues with the pregnancy.

This is stupid, nobody can force a woman to have an abortion.
They have the right to choose if they want to terminate a pregnancy, but still want to blame men when they regret their choice.
They can't have it both ways.

They willingly engaged in unsafe sex.
They should take responsibility for the situation they themselves created.
It's nobody else's fault but their own.

If a woman has a right to say she doesn't wish to have a child to a man she slept with and terminate that child, than a man certainly has the right to express his wishes that he doesn't want to be the father of a child to a woman he slept with.

Whilst the man never has to 'carry' a child or endure an abortion, I don't see women paying men $50,000 to get rid of child they don't want for unsafe sex they both took part in.

I'm with the men on this one.
You can't force a woman to have an abortion. You can't force a woman to become pregnant.
Both of those issues are totally in the hands of women.
If women want men to take greater responsibility for a pregnancy then they need to grant greater rights to men over the product of that pregnancy.

and the secularist are disgusted with paedophile priests. Very selective outrage. I wonder where their 'moral'conscience comes from.

Oh dear Wendy, using the victim card again I see, poor poor women, they don’t deserve to be treated like this.....

Now unless she had IF treatment, using his sperm, or was raped, then I would suggest she had consensual sex. The fact that one party wanted to keep the baby and the other didn’t, was perhaps something that should have been discussed before she opened her legs.

I’m also a bit confused with this statement ....What she got was the Panthers ‘fixer’ who brokered a deal for her to abort her child.

Her child, or their child. Which is it Wendy.

Perhaps the biggest lesson her is that these footballers should limit their lustful needs to the likes of hookers. No strings and only a couple of hundred bucks upfront, rather than tens of thousands later and much unwanted negative publicity, all because he's a footballer.

Bring on the male pill. It also seems sexist to single out footballers as over-entitled, without acknowledging the egos of some of their groupies.

Well said, Wendy Francis. There is so much emotion and fear around the issue of abortion, and so much future heartache. People seem to need someone to blame - and of course the easy option is the one with no power. This is mostly the mother. And, poor love, she is a mother not just 'the woman'. And all babies also have a father - you know, the one who protects them, provides for them, keeps them safe. What a sad world we live in; where alcohol, drugs and money are king and cheap power is more attractive to a man than the life of a small person.
It's so easy to look from a distance and find what a person should have done; how brave they should have been. Bit harder on the day with voices coming from all sides and betrayed by someone who (foolishly as it turns out) you trusted to love and care for you and your baby. Where was the independent counselling? Where was the assistance? Who had their arms around this mother to support her?
I hope our society one day regains its heart and can look at the abortion industry for the cold, hard, money-making machine that it is and we start to protect our next generation instead of culling them.

Not ashamed, i do not understand the reason why she push ahead with that abortion. How can we be sure after the abortion she donated all the money?

The woman felt pressured, really?

Did he physically threaten her? No he offered her $60 000.

Her choice (and it was her choice) was to walk away with $60 000 instead of being a single mother and raising a child without a father.
