A movement to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 19/7/2016

To circumvent this trend, a new leader will have to be chosen from outside the political ranks with no formal background in party politics.

I cannot but think this will end badly? And all the patently paranoid Turkish tyrant needs to complete the transition to a theocracy?

And all the excuse needed to get out of NATO, where the only larger military is America's?

Seize around 50 thermonuclear devices currently stored in his country? And as an antichrist into the waiting arms of Putin and an unholy Godless alliance?

Even as history and man made tragedy endlessly repeats itself? Most folk have no capacity whatsoever to learn the lessons it brings?

You still have hope, Alon - I no longer have.

It seems that the good old Israel that briefly existed until 1967 is now gone forever and all that is left is to weep.

One possibility is to split Israel into two states - one Jewish, one democratic, but this probably means lots of pain for my family who might lose their homes and farms and/or be forced to live under unpleasant oppressive laws and require a visa and passing through border-controls to visit each other.

Who would be your saviour, Alon? Labor? They (Mapai) were the ones responsible for the occupation in the first place, it's they who decided to keep the territories after the 1967 war, it's they who annexed Eastern Jerusalem and it's they who allowed the settlements to begin with. It was not the Jews who did all this - it was the socialists, presumably your friends whom you wish to rally. Oh my!

This piece is refreshing in many respects but I cant see how its central challenge holds water -"the government continues to propagate the notion that it can manage the conflict indefinitely."

Successive Israeli governments have managed the conflict cynically by paying lip service to US attempts to resolve the situation, thereby enjoying US support where it matters largely unabated. What could possibly worry an Isreali citizen about the future given this?

If the author is genuinely looking for a just outcome, and not just a whimsical return to the good old days, then the place to start is influencing the pro-Israel political lobby in the US.
Wasn't it Isiah who said "the effect of justice is peace"?

I think Israel has been the victim in this whole sorry saga.
There was a time going back a few decades, when Israel allowed free movement
of Arabs from Palestine into Israel but like Europe they were subjected to the blowing up
of buses, and more horrific, even a school bus with school children on board.
I am old enough to remember that incident clearly.

Irael took the occupied territories as a buffer zone around Israel after continuing
attacks by the Arabs, Not least of which was the attack by 6 Arab states In1967.

The Arabs continue to build tunnels into Israel.

Given that I watched an account by a reporter about the areas where the Arabs live
about 2nights ago, that stated it will be uninhabitable in 20years
And one man said he knew people who had no money at all, while most just eked out
a bare living some from catching fish.

This tells you why, it is the Arabs, always trying to tunnel their way into the prosperous Israel. They want to plunder that prosperity.
With no will on the Arab side to cease the terror attacks and tunnelling there can be
no peaceful solution. The Arabs simply cant stand to see the well run, prosperity on the Israel side. The Arabs lost the disputed territory by way of their attacks
on Israel. Israel has no obligation to give it back. Full stop.

The Arabs are the only ones who can leave Israel alone to Live in peace.
Something they have never done. The onus is squarely on them to stop the conflict.
