Elephant in the greenhouse part I : Comments
By Michael Kile, published 27/11/2015Half a century ago, the cause célèbre was dangerous anthropogenic population change. So why is climate alarmism now centre-stage?

Population growth IS the problem.
Don`t hold your breath Rhrosty, I suspect we are well past the tipping point. At least my, non existent, grandkids won`t suffer. Posted by ateday, Friday, 27 November 2015 9:01:27 AM

Population growth is NOT the problem. It's already under control in most o the world, and the population increase is now being driven by people living longer.
Meanwhile anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are so high that they'd still be a big problem with half the population. Having said that, there's an interesting alternative viewpoint to consider: http://www.monbiot.com/2015/11/19/pregnant-silence/ Posted by Aidan, Friday, 27 November 2015 9:58:38 AM

83 million new people per year increase. Living longer does not account for that.
Population growth IS THE PROBLEM. There are none so blind as the old, but true, expression goes. Posted by ateday, Friday, 27 November 2015 10:32:59 AM

It depends what the "PROBLEM" is:
Yes, survival can be supported not only with current numbers but even with more, if that's all we want. So even our span of life, which could technically even be increased. But not the quality of our life. In order to sustain larger numbers of humans, two things are inevitably required: 1. Regimentation and streamlining. More rules and regulations, more uniformity - less freedom. 2. Ever higher technology, which takes us further away from both nature and morality and makes us wonder why we are even here in the first place. THIS is the elephant in the room. The Problem is Environmental Destruction.
Homo Sapiens is the only animal species actively engaged in destroying its own environment for its own selfish gratification. When the Environment has gone so are we. It is what keeps us alive. As you say we shall wonder why we are even here in the first place if we cannot enjoy what this beautiful planet can offer if treated kindly. Posted by ateday, Friday, 27 November 2015 3:15:23 PM

Yet we persist with an inherently counterproductive and fundamentally flawed economic model that requires not only endless population growth and mostly losers; but the consumption of fuel likely to increase the rate of warming!?
Don't worry, endless war, massive fire, famine and flood will wipe out enough of us to bring about some balance, preferably before we have crossed an irreversible tipping point.
Those in denial need to turn off the air conditioning that hides the "evidence" for them! The deniers equivalent of burying the head in the sand? [Hey if I can't feel it it ain't happening!?]
Hopefully they will be the first ones losing everything as a consequence of man made, [money for it own sake,] created climate change!
One notes that our sun the engine room of most of our climate changes has been in a waning (cooling) phase since the mid seventies! (NASA) Go figure?
