German interior minister aims to toughen asylum law
Berlin (AFP) - Germany's Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere is seeking to toughen asylum laws by sending migrants back to the first European Union country they reached and by reducing benefits, under a draft law seen by AFP Thursday.

The draft, which has not yet been approved by the council of ministers, aims to discourage asylum-seekers flowing into Germany, which is expecting this year's influx to spike to up to a million migrants from 200,000 last year.

Such a law, if passed, would represent a major reversal on Germany's easing of asylum laws for Syrians.

Europe's biggest economy has become the top destination for people fleeing wars and misery in Syria and elsewhere. Many of them have reached Germany after taking a perilous route through the Balkans and central Europe.

Conservative De Maiziere wants the so-called Dublin Regulation, which normally requires people to make their asylum claims in the first EU country they enter, to be enforced again after Germany said in August it would no longer apply to Syrians.

If his draft is approved, it could leave dozens of thousands of people who have reached Germany in recent weeks out in the cold.

It would also leave migrants who are refused asylum but who cannot be deported to their home countries under German law with neither the right to work nor the right to social benefits, putting them in an impossible situation.

In a separate development, the head of Germany's Office for Migration and Refugees, Manfred Schmidt, resigned Thursday, citing "personal reasons".

The office had repeatedly come in for criticism amid a huge backlog in handling a record wave of asylum requests as Europe faces its worst migration crisis since World War II.

Guy's warning are based on a business as usual condition of the economy.
I suspect what we should be discussing is how the situation will be
handled if an economic crisis comes upon us ?
Will it mean that immigrants could only move locally because troops
would be used to corral them into their home countries.
A financial crisis would mean that there would be NO money available

There is another problem on the horizon, Egypt.
Agriculture studies have determined that Egypt a hundred years ago or
so had a population of about 40 million and it was limited by the Nile
Valley productivity. Because Egypt had a large export income from
oil and tourism the government was able to subsidise food and fuel.
This enabled an increase in the population up to the current 85 million.

However peak oil exports declined sharply from 2000 onwards and
forced the government to decrease the food & fuel subsidies.
The resultant rioting culminated in the overthrow of Mubarak.
With the military government in control the situation has not improved.

The Gulf states have been helping Egypt out but with much lower oil
incomes a financial crisis would probably end that charity.
When that happens 45 Million Egyptians will start walking.
Their shortest walk to food might be into the sub Saharan countries
but they will meet people walking North.
So it would be boats or walking through Israel or Jordan.

Not a good vibe coming from that scenario.

We need to stop destabilising countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Ukraine - these are the countries where most of the refugees are coming from - we aren't innocent bystanders - or at least our governments aren't. We need to get our Middle Eastern allies like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Israel to stop aiding and assisting ISIS.

The reason why Germany is an economic success, Guy Hallows, is because it is still largely populated by Germans. Who, as you correctly pointed out, have a well appreciated cultural norm of "discipline and efficiency". They also have a negative birth rate. Yes, the German population has declined. Because many can't afford to have kids any more. Many make around 2,000 dollars per month have no way to raise a family. In the last 15 years wages in Germany have fallen continuously, made possible by politicians. My own income has fallen below 50% since the introduction of the Euro. Working for peanuts makes it easy to create a "German Economic Miracle".

While an influx of skilled people might be welcome in Germany most of the refugees arriving here are not skilled at all.

Migrants get cash benefits in Germany of about 500 dollars per month which is about as much as the average yearly income in the balkan countries. Most have kids for which they get extra benefits, and in many cases they also are married to two or three women for which they get extra benefits as well. So if you have 3 wives and ten kids that can easily amount to 4,000 dollars per month. Who would then stay in the Middle East if the paradise is so close.

As far as the future of EU and Euro is concerned - there is none. The EU countries are now re-introducing border controls and are starting to set up razor-wire fences. Hundreds of thousands of refugees are stranded in the balkan countries, where many will freeze to death in the coming months. This all will lead to the end of the EU, and subsequently the Euro.

As you say the situation in Africa is bad and is getting worse. About 200 million people would come to Europe if they could and they will try sooner or later. Europe for them means Germany. When they are all here that means in our small house instead of our family of 4 there will be living an additional 10 african young men. No work, nothing to do, no women. Imaging yourself what that means.

And no worries about those millions coming to Australia, they won't because they can't. The paradise is Germany. The only one who will come to Australia is myself.

The value to the USA of having its dollar as the world's main reserve currency is actually very low. Nowhere near the cost of any of its 21st century wars.

If they lose, they've far from done for – their dollar would devalue slightly, but only in the short term. Because their exports would then be more competitive, they then wouldn't need to run such big deficits so they'd soon be back to normal.

Yes I can. Stalin looked to shift the blame. The Nazis were the only others he could credibly blame, and once it became clear what else the Nazis had done, the accusation looked credible. However AIUI the truth came out much earlier than the mid 90s.

The claims of Jim Rickards are ludicrous. There's no plausible mechanism for the events he forecasts to occur. A devaluation of the dollar will cause share values on the American market to rise. Falling returns aren't much of a problem when interest rates do likewise, and trying to extrapolate a constant trend was never likely to deliver a sensible result.

Whether the USA enters a depression depends on what economic policies they implement: if they try to take more money out of the economy than they put in (aka run a surplus) when the private sector is weak, it will damage growth (and probably fail to achieve a surplus). But if they implement a stimulus, the economy can quickly recover.

The USA's debt is far from catastrophic. There's a slight chance that it could necessitate a tax rise at some time in the future, but having to pay a bit more tax is not a catastrophe.

I'm guessing Jim's bought gold and is trying to get more people to buy it to stop the gold price from falling further.
