"These same people, if asked by their employers to document how they spend their salaries, would refuse and claim that it was a violation of their right to privacy."
Utterly wrong analogy. Perhaps "These same people, if asked by their employers to document how they spent the employers money, would be required to do so." I get that not everything governments does should be in the public domain because there is no reliable way of sharing secret info just with the citizens of a country. The problems are that there is often no credible oversight to ensure that what is being kept secret is kept that way for the right reasons and also the unusually long time some secrets are kept (well past any technical need for the secrets). area 51...my god
The Cold war dictated that advanced research had to be conducted in secrecy. Simple as that. what better way was there to do this than using a air base that was 30 min flight by 707 jet. Today the base does not seem so relevant , with spy satellites and hacking. What better way was there to conduct test flights ,bombers flying at mach4 and advanced fighters like the F22. This all started at the Skunk works which is Mc Donald Douglas at Area 51. But now there are no more secrets , anyone can see the Area 51 site from any number of web sites and in many cases see fighter aircraft parked on the ramps. Of course the really secret stuff is still in the area of Area 51 which has once again been divided into another secret section but I cant remember its name. Aliens? Who knows...time will tell. In the Australian context of this article...Woomera....did the government really close the base when it was found out the military was conducting missile tests? So...Who knows what is still going on at Area 51...but for sure...it still is going on Posted by robbo5, Monday, 24 February 2014 7:37:24 PM

Everett Themer in "Area 51: secret conspiracy or simply science?" has provided a sober analysis debunking the conspiracy theories surrounding this US military base. However, I don't see how this is of much relevance to the average reader of Online Opinion, who would not fall for such nutty theories in the first place and is likely to have little interest in a remote US facility.
Perhaps we need some home grown conspiracy theories about Australian installations: 1. What are those mysterious circular structures at RAAF Scherger, which show up on the satellite photos? http://goo.gl/maps/wc52i 2. Are those kilometres of antennas in Queensland really for a military radar, or are they to communicate with aliens? http://wikimapia.org/3443439/JORN-Queensland-Jindalee-Transmit-Site-via-LONGREACH ;-) Posted by tomw, Wednesday, 26 February 2014 8:42:07 AM

Oh please, tomw, don't get him started.

The real conspiracy would be your attempt to have us believe this is a valid comparative analogy...
Besides, it is possible to be confident that "...powerful forces are always at work in the shadows" without subscribing to the default position that everything is a conspiracy or even that all powerful forces are axiomatically evil.
Even if the illuminati reptilians are.
