How concerned should we be about Iranian threats to block the Strait of Hormuz?

A bit more history required.

Good article.

Indicates that Iran's nuclear weapon's program enjoys long term Iranian nationalist support - longer than US or Israeli Presidential and PM terms. There is a possibility that if Obama is sufficiently low in the pre-election Presidential polls he will permit airstrikes on Iran to rally the excitable US voters around the President (by election time in Nov 2012).

Iran's nuclear program may go as far back as the Shah. This early beginning was during the Nixon Presidency when Dicky's destructive helpers, (the same) Rumsfeld and Cheney, actually supported the prospect of a nuclear armed Shahian Iran as a force for stability (almost US-Israeli style) in the Middle East.

A major issue is the extent of a US/Israeli airstrike. Just against what are artificially termed as "nuclear facilities"? Or against the much broader categories of industries, factories, command and control HQs and research bodies that go into a nuclear weapon AND missile program ie perhaps half of Iran's high tech industries.

Over the next two decades we need to be afraid... Iran has spent years investing in managing their population, so they have stopped the cause of the poverty.

For over a decade, PR campaigns and inmans in their mosques, along with free contraception, have all both worked to reduce the number of babies, so that they have zero population growth... average fertility is a bit over two babies for every two adults.

They are beginning to enjoy the demographic dividend... few dependant oldies, and few expensive kiddies. Like Thailand (who has done the same thing), Iran has a great future!

Meanwhile we have have a future of collapse (along with Europe, with a mere 1.2 children for every two adults) we are getting older and more feeble. We have failed to produce enough children to reproduce ourselves- we are quite literally a dying culture and a dying race.

Too many children, or too few, create a disaster!

While we make 1.8 children for every two adults Many countries, especially in moslem north Africa are making 8 children per woman! No wonder they are poor! I can't afford my four kids, and my government can't afford schools and roads for our nations few babies... imagine how even our wealthy country would manage if the population quadroupled every 25 year! Forget it!

(look up 'total fertility rate')

The trouble with defence advisors is that they are defence advisors.

Every human activity is measured in terms of predator or prey. Every country is either a potential threat or a potential ally against a potential threat. Populations only exist in terms of their leaders' power struggles. Countries only exist in terms of their geo-political importance.

On all counts, Iran and its people are on the wrong side of international politics and must be made to conform. Some excuse can always be found or, more likely, invented in order to achieve this. That's why we have defence advisors.

The US Government is re-playing the Pearl Harbor deception,
in which they kept bringing economic pressures to bear on Japan until Japan had no choice but to attack,

then pretended Japan's reaction to US provocations
was a total surprise and wholly unjustified.

This allowed Roosevelt to trick the American people into WW2.

Today we are seeing the same thing with the US bringing economic pressures to bear on Iran, hoping Iran will strike back,

thereby allowing the US to play the innocent victim of an Iranian "surprise" attack and trick Americans into a massive escalation of WW3.

I think the comment about "defence advisors" had relevance, comparitive national fertility maybe but definitely not mass listing of blog links.

The Iranian bomb clock is ticking hence all stakhanovite efforts towards relevance may save millions.

Loose comments sink ships.
