If you could excel at one sport, one sport only, what would it be, and why ?

At school in the forties and fifties I always played Rugby League in the winter, and Soft Ball and later on, swimming in the summer. On joining the Army I played Rugby League during the winter months in OZ, and anything going, when abroad.

Occasionally when the opportunity arose I boxed, getting an 'enormous amount' of ring experience ('cept Jimmy didn't have a ring ?) with the inimitable and incomparable James (Jimmy) SHARMAN at the Royal Easter Show, Sydney ! Taking my turn at being knocked out and then knocking out all manner of 'former' champions, at Jimmy's 'Pavilion' as he described it ? My only regret, I was never permitted to beat the drum !

On my discharge sanity and maturity finally prevailed and I ultimately found Cricket. I'll not wax lyrically on all the benefits I unearthed from playing the game, I feel sure I'd bore you all senseless with my endless machinations and complexities of the sport. Other than to say it's probably the most demanding game, in terms of personal fitness and concentration that I've ever needed to confront, in playing anything. Anyway, that kind of explains my initial foray into a sport in which I'd dearly love to excel, the game of Cricket.

Now, I'd really like to hear of yours - your preferred sport whether you were good at it or not so good, doesn't matter. What does matter, you thoroughly enjoyed participating, is all that really counts ? A simple, light hearted topic for a holiday respite - before we're once more confronted with another year of war, financial and political inertia, inhumanity to mankind and vicious crime.

Good one O sung wu :)
I always wanted to be good at a sport that would make me a lot of money!

As a woman, I think tennis would be good if you were at the top of the heap.
I always played tennis because my father had played at Wimbledon as a youth, and then was a tennis coach while I was growing up.

Instead of all the film stars, I had Bjorne Borg on a poster up on my wall at home as a teenager!

Mate hard!
How do I separate the NRL and Cricket?
As each are played in different seasons may I be good at both.
Well NRL wins if only one choice.

Rugby league, cricket, & a bit of show jumping at school.

After school I bought a nice sports car, [Morgan +4], which was too quick for me. Did a bit of club motorsport, hill climbs & such to learn to drive it.

This led to motor racing. I still hold a Bathurst lap record I set in 1967, & drove for Ford & Holden in Bathurst races.

Once I knew I was no world champion I lost interest, & went sailing. Did 7 Hobarts shipping mostly as navigator, but in 45 footers with 6 or 7 crew, you still do a lot of the sailing.

In my mid 50s, when a daughter discovered horses, I went back to show jumping, & had a lot of fun. I learnt just how little I knew, sitting in on some of her lessons. Gave that up when the body lost its bounce, & coming off meant injuries.

These days I have a couple of nice older cars again, & go for mid week runs through the border ranges, when the traffic is light. I wouldn't be too quick around Bathurst these days, but a top down cruise through the ranges, on a sunny day is still great fun.

Hi there Everyone...Now we're in possession of the Ashes once more !

Thanks - SUSEONLINE...Tennis, a very tough demanding game for sure. I've played a few (social) sets over the years, until I was thoroughly thrashed by this slender young lady I know, who made it immeasurably worse by apologising. And that was it for me, forever !

There's no doubt, big money is to be had if you're any good, as well as travel, endorsements, fame and acclaim etc. I do enjoy watching the OZ open, and genuinely feel very sorry for the players when the temperature exceeds 35c on centre court. Yet that manage to continue, which illustrates their phenomenal athleticism I reckon.

BELLY ol' friend...You sure we're NOT brothers by chance ? In my initial post I placed cricket at the top, but who knows if I was any good, League may, I stress MAY, just nudge cricket aside ? Still, you can enjoy a more prolonged playing life with cricket than League, with all the interminable injuries associated with the game, don't you think ?

Hello there TONY LAVIS...'Luge' from my basic understanding is a very dangerous 'sport' where substantial (serious) injury may be occasioned to one's anatomy or skeletal structure ? And Tony, what on earth is the sport of 'Skeleton' ? I must admit, I've not heard of it, unless it's a derivative or subsidiary of Luge perhaps ? And Tony, apart from the NSW and Victorian alps, where could one participate in Luge, or would it be necessary to go abroad ?

To...ONE UNDER GOD & HASBEEN, speak with you both later if I may ? Thank you all for your brilliant contributions.

Hi there ONE UNDER GOD...Gee, it's been awhile old friend ? How have you been, well I hope ? I understand that you don't like the commercialism that seems to have enveloped sport these days, and I'm absolutely with you.

Another issue that concerns me is the importance on 'winning' that some parents place on their children, rather than to encourage them to merely participate for the love of the game. Yet we're forever being pilloried by the Health Authorities because our children are deemed too fat and lazy. Moreover the only wish to sit in front of a computer rather than bowl or kick a ball ? It's little wonder that some kids are resenting being 'pushed' into sport, purely to satisfy their parents wishes with all the pressures and coercion that comes with it all ?

So yes, ONE UNDER GOOD I do support many of the principles that you've enunciated herein, that much of sport has been high-jacked by the enlightened academic fraternity, as well as big business, sadly.

Though I'm not entirely sure exactly what the specifics of some of your arguments are, I do support much of what you say in broad terms at least. I must say it's really good to be able to speak with you again now. Take care, OK !

HASBEEN...I'll speak with you and others soon.

>>'Luge' from my basic understanding is a very dangerous 'sport' where substantial (serious) injury may be occasioned to one's anatomy or skeletal structure ?<<

I doubt it's much more dangerous than skateboarding. You start slowly and work your way up. A lot of sports are dangerous: skateboarding, surfing, bodyboarding, boxing... even cricket used to be a deadly game. Didn't one of the Australian players have his skull fractured during the Bodyline series? That injury could have been a lot worse than it was.

>>And Tony, what on earth is the sport of 'Skeleton' ? I must admit, I've not heard of it, unless it's a derivative or subsidiary of Luge perhaps ?<<

It's almost the same as luge: they're both single man toboggan sports. In luge down feet first on your back; in skeleton you down head first on your front.

>>And Tony, apart from the NSW and Victorian alps, where could one participate in Luge, or would it be necessary to go abroad ?<<

I think you'd have to travel. Canada or Scandinavia probably have good facilities for the sport.

Cheers,

Tony

G'day to you HASBEEN...

You know, you never cease to amaze me with some of your exploits. Still, if you can master military (Naval) aviation, there'd be very little that could stop you I should think.

Your time at Bathurst (The Hardie Ferodo 500?) with the huge Fords and Holdens would be fairly easy for you, with your flying background ? Interestingly, there appears to be no real dichotomy with the Sydney Hobart Yacht race, and Bathurst 500, though I guess there is ?

I should think that anything equestrian would be a real challenge to most people. For years I always harboured an opinion based on my own ignorance that horse racing...well there's nothing to it really ? Until I had occasion to have some (rather negative) dealings with a reasonably good hoop. He really enlightened me as to how tough, dangerous, and how electrifying and inspiring it is, to ride thoroughbreds in gallops racing !

So in my opinion to assist your daughter with show jumping, just adds another amazing string to your already burgeoning bow there HASBEEN !

In my own case It's really quite remarkable, how few opportunities I had, to explore other sports as a teenager, coming as I did from the inner Western Suburbs of Sydney, in the 1940's and 50's. Still, I was fortunate enough to find the two sports I really did love, Rugby League, trained at Pratten Park, Ashfield, and Cricket, practised at St Luke's Oval, Burwood.

Hi there ONTHEBEACH...

Sailing sounds pretty good to me but the other two...well, I can't handle anything that has a requirement for me to go underwater ! Whether it's in an enclosed, tiled swimming pool, or in open water. Anything that might attach itself to my foot or leg, will result in me scrambling ashore devoid of all dignity whatsoever, for someone over seventy years of age, it's not a nice look ! I can swim a bit, but that's the limit ?

Thank you all for your timely contributions.

Dear O Sung Wu,

Welcome back - missed you.

My sport of choice would have to be hiking.
I have always loved to hike, but I really learned to
love it when we'd lived in Los Angeles and spent
many of our holidays in Yosemite National Park,
(in Northern California), a wilderness of
evergreen forests, high meadows, and sheer walls of
granite. The spectacular Yosemite Valley, made quite
an impression. As did Banff National Park in Canada.

If everything goes well, we're planning a holiday to
Tassie next year - and hiking is definitely on the agenda.

I forgot to add that with hiking you get to enjoy
spectacular scenery, and appreciate the beauty of
nature. There are also - usually a choice of hiking routes,
and you can also incorporate and enjoy canoeing,
and other water sports on nearby lakes and streams
at most National Parks.

Ah o sung wu you find "there appears to be no real dichotomy with the Sydney Hobart Yacht race, and Bathurst 500, though I guess there is" & there most definitely IS, & you can include the horses too.

You see, after school all that exercise & physical training was hard to fit in. I moved on to the other sports, where instead of physical effort, the sportsman/woman merely has to provide the finesse to control the power provided by an engine, wind or an animal. I like to suggest that these sports avoid all that uncouth sweating & such, but it is not true. You can get very sweaty driving around Bathurst, winding a winch on a yacht, or riding a horse in a cross country event.

Yes The Hardie Ferodo 500. In 68 I took second in the Holden Dealer Team Monaro, but I had won the Bathurst 100 in a 2.5L F1 Brabham Repco at Easter. In those days, when Formula 1 cars were still available to private teams, the Bathurst 100 was second only to the Aus Grand Prix. The 500 had yet to become a big deal, & was not even televised.

In the words of the famous actress, why don't you come up & see me some time. I'm sure you would enjoy a run through the boarder ranges, wind in your hair, if you still have any of course

Hi Foxy, glad to hear you plan on going hiking, I assume that means your health has come good. I don't think you could have contemplated it a while back.

onthebeach, your sports appear to fit your forum name. Do you supply much to the table with that spear fishing. I've tried it a few times, but nothing worth spearing ever appeared.

We used to see quite a few painted lobster snorkeling in the islands, but did not have anything big enough to cook them in, so just looked at them.

Hi (again) ONE UNDER GOD...

My Black canine companion is depression, thank you for asking my friend. Thankfully, it's at bay at the moment.

Hello there FOXY...

It's really good to hear from you again, and I hope you're in marvellous health also.

Hiking in Yosemite National Park sounds spectacular, save for one particularly ill-tempered intruder - Bears ! It's true, I've never encountered one in the wild, and I've never been to Yosemite N.P. either. But I've been to Banff on a number of occasions and trying to describe the vistas there is almost impossible, except by a testimonial to it's sheer beauty, and the allure of it's sensational scenery.

Hiking through the American forests is quite unalike to doing something similar here. Our topography is quite different to that of the United States. They have towering, often snow covered, peaks. Whereas we with our brown rolling hills, often scorched a dusky bronze, by a fierce blistering sun.

Actually the only place we did some hiking on the west coast, was in Muir Wood. Which is just north of Sausalito, across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. The Muir, Redwoods are apparently the oldest and tallest trees in the United States, so as you'd imagine their beauty and stature was utterly profound ?

Many thanks FOXY for your lovely contribution !

Yes HASBEEN...

Driving through the Border Ranges in a car 'prepared and driven by you' sounds absolutely marvellous ! The slip stream tugging away at what precious hair of mine that remains, sounds both exciting and daunting at the same time ! Very very tempting I must say.
Many thanks for your contribution too.

In Australia we call it bushwalking. But I'm not sure if walking really counts as a sport. Minus five points to Ravenclaw for confusing hiking with bushwalking.

Foxy, hiking was never my thing, but I always enjoy scenery like Yosemite National Park, which I did visit years ago (sooo excited about Yogi Bear!).

However, I was too scared to go far from the bus because of bears....
I think I saw way too many American wilderness TV shows about bears attacking humans to ever consider going anywhere where I might meet one :).
I admire anyone who takes that chance!

It is my fervent desire that I should become undisputed world champion at the sport of "Bo-taoshi" before my 95th birthday. If I should fail to excel at Bo-tanshi, and I can't imagine why I wouldn't, I will take up that most popular sport of "Ga-ga Ball" something I find most exhilarating, although I'm yet to actually try it, they wont let me on the bloody team. Previously I have found invigoration in the sport of "Buzkashi" having no qualms about the requirement of grabbing the carcass of a headless goat whilst at a full gallop, mounted on my trusty dromedary, a sport which is finding increased popularity in Outer Mongolia. Only last year a team from there defeated Swaziland 3-2 to claim the prestigious "Buck Nut Trophy" for the 4th year running. You may have caught the replay on Fox Sports.
In my student days, I must say without any feeling of superiority, I was the school champion at both "Quidditch" and "Skibdu", I say, nothing like a rousing game of Skibdu to get the adrenaline pumping. Unfortunately as both sports are solitary it was difficult to find an opponent at times. I say without embarrassment, I was a staring member of the schools "Bossaball" team which defeated Collegians 47-nil, when the Collegians failed to turn up for our annual chukka. I'll never forget hearing Mr Diddles the schools Sports Master yelling "What does Dill Brain think he's doing" as I raced down field without the ball, going in the wrong direction, I almost scored for the other side. So stick to your obscure sports like golf, tennis, football, give my a rousing game of "Cheese Rolling" any day.

Dear O Sung Wu and Suse,

Funny thing about bears. We never had a problem
with them while hiking. Hiking is not a problem
as long as you stay on the designated routes,
and watch out for them, and behave sensibly.
Rangers warn people to keep
their distance from the bears and don't feed them.
Some bears are used to humans, but of course you
don't know which ones - so you don't approach any
of them. In Yosemite bears often come into the
camping grounds looking for food. Disposing of rubbish
and keeping things tidy is also important.
We did come across a mother bear with cubs in Yosemite
once - but she was about fifty metres away and we did
not approach her. My husband took some photos of the
mother bear and two cubs, sitting in a posed position,
with the mother in the middle, and the cubs on either
side, and we went on our way.
Staying away from bears is the best
thing to do - bears weigh more than double the weight
of humans (500 lbs) and even if friendly they can
injure people.

Belly, I did a bit of swimming and cricket in my younger days. I can honestly claim to have faced that great West Indian fast bowler Wes Hall at school. During a WI tour down under Mr Hall and other WI cricketers paid a promotional visit to school, in a suit and tie from the spot Wes rolled the arm over (bowled) 2 at each boy in the nets, I hit one and missed one, p/s not exactly at his usual 100mph, more like 10.
I like to see the mighty Rabbitohs score a win. My sport today is played through my partners grandchildren, one goes well at RL, they won the grand final this year, and the other likes Netball like her mother and grandmother, my partner who in her day was a leading player in NZ.
Sport can play a very important roll in a child's development, but I hate to see it when some parents turn it into a gladiatorial contest for 6 year old's.

Hasbeen,

Hi. Yes, there are fish. We tend to go to the nice locations for diving and as you know from your driving, it is the joy of living expressed through the activity that is tops.

The good thing about spearfishing is that we see and can take only what we eat. However amateur and recreational fisherman are almost invariably that way, with the odd highly publicised exception being used by people who favour State control of everything to justify the millions wasted by the feckless Greens et al on bans, zones and an over-abundance of bureaucrats making 'policy' and monitoring. As you infer, recreational fishermen are limited by all sorts of factors and put more into fishing than they could ever take out.

One can't have regrets, but I would have liked to cast off in my twenties to sail. However I had to study and work. Independence was my genetic inheritance and disposition, much as you might say.

I don't know how any of you survived those muscle cars on those tracks. Few members of the public outside of those passionately interested in motor sports (and there are many of them) realise the challenges and risks of the tracks (and the cars!). Full credit to the drivers' skills and especially their courage.

While on that subject, that is something the selfish feminists will never understand about youth and particularly boys: that risk-taking is completely normal for them and is essential to their development. The PC extremism of the Nanny State with feminist teachers banning schoolyard games that have been played for centuries, such as Red Rover, actually harms boys and many girls too. School kids can't roam parks and bush areas on the bikes any more lest some interfering thirty-something harridan of the fun police complains to the Council and police, 'There are BOYS doing something on bikes!'.

one under god, ".my father in law..told me of a huge shark..pre the yanks arriving..in morten bay."

There are plenty of Bull Sharks in Moreton Bay, Brisbane River and Gold Coast canals. They are solid, toothy, keen and are to be avoided. In the whale season there are very large sharks near the coast and around the Moreton Bay Islands. There is evidence of 'smaller' 2.5 - 3.0 metre sharks being killed in a bite or two. Nature isn't the Disney view of the Crocodile Hunter and so on.

Sorry to hear about your grandson's rooster, the chooks and the pigeons. Councils give in to serial complainers and protest groups who often are in it just for the power of forcing Council to do what they (the protesters) want. Sadly, everybody minds their neighbour's backyard these days :(

G'day there PAUL1405...

Your choice of sports utterly confound me old friend ? My only clue to those of which you've kindly listed, were born somewhere out of merry England, perhaps during the later part of the 18th, or early 19th century ? When it was often asserted by those of the ruling class, that all well to do gentleman never actually took part in sport per se. ?

Rather, 'sport' as such was the entire preserve of the working or underclass. Whereas, gentlemen partook in activities that were often described as more like that of organised 'idling' ? Where many of those who sought a sloth like existence, pursued recreational diversions, with 'games' or other physical absurdities during their many hours of leisure.

Anyway PAUL1405, thank you very much for your contribution.

Onthebeach I think courage is going too far with motor sport. I don't know anyone who ever thought they could be killed, or even seriously hurt in motor racing. That was something that only happened to other people, never to you.

Eventing to me requires more courage. Galloping a horse at a big jump, when that vehicle, your horse, has a mind of it's own, & may do something other than what the rider asked for & expects is I think much more dangerous than playing with cars. I prefer show jumping, which is more controlled, & somewhat slower.

The only time I was apprehensive was coming back to Oz from the Solomons. I had been caught in an unexpected cyclone in the Solomon sea, & had had 3 shades of you know what bashed out of me & the boat. It had me unsure if all the work I had done on the boat myself was up to the job in such conditions.

I spent about 5 weeks faffing around in Bougainville & Honiara, before I was emotionally ready to take on the Coral Sea alone again. I had to screw all my courage up into a little ball to sail out from Guadalcanal, & point the boat at Cairns, 1100 nautical miles away.

You don't have to be an any great trip to feel that way of course. I think the feeling the first time I sailed out of Sydney heads bound for Port Stephens, my first real passage I was about as nervous

Hi there ONE UNDER GOD...

Thank you for the lengthy amount of material you've provided herein. Whereupon you took us all through the many activities you've pursued over the years. It would appear too that you were quite taken with 'track and field' at one point, but for some reason you seem to have been disillusioned with either the administration or other competitors who were also so involved ?

I get a sense that you believe there's substantial corruption involved in Aussie Athletics ? Or have I got it wrong with this summation ? Is it your concern with the burgeoning use of performance enhancing drugs, or alternatively, the vast amounts of money to be made, or a combination of both ?

There's no doubt whatsoever, since the IOOF dropped the strict requirement of permitting amateurs only from participating in the Games, we've been inundated and assailed by all manner of drug enhanced, gender neutral, mechanical (human) anthropoids ! Sadly it's a case of higher, faster, deeper, and stronger ? Soon, there'll only be an outward facade with that of an ordinary human being.

Therefore, I too share your cynicism and incredulity with most administrations associated with professional sport. Clean them up, and the 'troops' will follow is my belief ?

I still have this pivotal sense ONE UNDER GOD, that you (still) feel like you're being 'assaulted' by the authorities, in one way or another ? It's a continuing theme that tends to emerge right through everything you write, and that's pretty sad really. As I've stated in my previous threads months and months ago, I reckon you're hurting.

Anyway my friend, I'm well off Topic, thanks again for your substantial contributions, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for your further response to the Topic ONE UNDER GOD...

You're perfectly correct when you say that money has debauched sport, and removed much of the incentive for a gifted athlete to remain an amateur for too long ?

For the life of me I cannot understand nor reconcile in my own mind how 'sport' equates to money ? Whereas, I'd define sport as an, activity for pleasure, competition, or exercise. Such activities therefore, collectively equate to enjoyment ! Still the administrators are never fully satisfied until the phrase - 'filthy lucre is inserted into any scenario. And the word 'pleasure' receives little or no acknowledgement or validation ?

I wonder therefore what example our professional sportsmen and women set our younger generation ? Not how to lose graciously, or how to behave with dignity when we win ? No, they try to learn by example, watching our Test players 'sledging' the opposition, a clear absence of sportsmanship, losing with total decorum, playing the game purely for personal pleasure...? I think not !

Thanks again ONE UNDER GOD.

My sport now, or recreation rather, is rifle shooting - target that is.
It is a sport which can be pursued at almost any age, from 8 to 108, and though challenging is not physically demanding.
Perfect for the leisurely sports-minded person.

However, my passion was scuba diving. Now, alas, one of memories, and of fanciful thoughts of re-visiting - health and conditions permitting, as I would have to do the required course again, and pass it.
Have some neat underwater colour slides from Herron Island and from Lilli Pilli (Port Hacking, Sydney), and memories of a 100ft dive on the reef at the mouth of Port Moresby harbour (PNG), surrounded by tiny irridescent blue fish, and noting a few white-tipped reef sharks - those magnificently streamlined and graceful torpedos - and of wrecks of Catalinas in the harbour itself, and collecting some stoneware beer bottles from near where the old wharf use to be.
Ah, memories.

Most disturbing dive? Off North Mole at Freemantle, WA - supposedly in search of a delectable saltwater crayfish - where visibility was virtually nil and I'm sure I was passed by a large dark shark-like shape as I kept my back pressed against the rock wall, peering into the gloom. I didn't hang about.

Did surf lifesaving and archery (recurve, not compound) in earlier days - and witnessed Simon Fairweather winning the individual archery gold for Oz at the 2000 olympics - and I gained Instructor qualification in both of these 'sports'.

Can't ride a horse (though I tried a few times), can't sail, lousy at rugby, cricket and soccer, and poor at golf and tennis.
So, anyone for rifle shooting? (The non-sportsman's, or woman's, sport.)
Exercise? Farming and volunteer fire-fighting.

In my wild erratic fancy, visions come to me of .... earlier days, when I wasn't yet a crotchety, past-middle-aged, bachelor-with-good-friend.
Ah, sweet mystery of life, what hopes, what dreams.
(I could once do 100 metres underwater - with fins - on a single breath. Lost youth - and 'experience' is a poor substitute.)

Just got in from 14 days of Ice Climbing in Antarctica, a warm up for the winter season. That followed my winning of the Tour De France on a unicycle, yellow jersey all the way, bicycles are for wozzies. I think I'll just pop out to the tool shed and knock meself up a new Nazcar, only fitting I should defend the title, don't you think? So you do not like the subject Paul?
Or are you just trying to add humor.
Sport drives this country and always has.
Over my shoulder is a Sir Don Bradman black and white photo.
Framed in the old fence palling,s it is center stage.
My mate says Cricket is a well call it Feminine game.
He however sees only one sport and one team as not being that way.
I have heard so many target sport in this country.
Strange but true, unavoidably so, most who do not like sport never had the ability to play any sport.
But they, well some of them launch constantly in to diatribes telling us sport is for empty heads.
I dare not say what I think of these types.
But let me tell you, 40 years after my last League game my mates though faraway are still my mates.
And on a little country town Cricket ground my three ducks in three innings is still used to remind me when I visit that town.
Sport is a force for good not bad thousands even millions has been raised by sports for charity's.

Dear o sung wu,

Thanks for this discussion.

I for one am thoroughly enjoying all the posts
and people's sports. The posts give such a great
insight into some of the posters. Great stuff,
and good to get away from politics for a while.

I missed your earlier question to me about my
health. Sorry for not answering. My last procedure
was not a success - and I'll be undergoing more
treatments around Feb/March. I'm optimistic that
things will all go well - and I'll be off to
Tassie before too long.
In the meantime - Christmas is just around
the corner and I'm really looking forward to time
spent with family,grandchildren, and friends,
and of course - cooking for them all.

Wishing everyone a very Joyous Festive Season and a
New Year filled with Peace, Health, Happiness, Hope,

Hi there BELLY old mate...

Once again you hit the proverbial nail on the head my friend when you say that 'sport' is a substantial part of the conduit that binds us all (EVERYONE OF US) together ! Notwithstanding our colour, ethnicity, creed (our various belief systems) even gender.

I would might suggest 'sport' could even be a solution to many of our more intractable civil-unrest situations ? The problem is to determine the correct mechanism(s) necessary to inculcate sport as a viable option to that of guns and bullets ? We can only hope I guess.

Another very wise contribution from you, BELLY ol' son ! Many thanks.

Hi there SALTPETRE...

Rifle Shooting eh ? I must admit I don't mind punching a few holes in a target every once and a while, though I don't own a F/A of any description these days. The licensing requirements are a little too oppressive for me, as well as the exacting demands for safe custody of the weapon, which I do fully support.

Now scuba diving is an activity that I'd never consider for many reasons, particularly the notion that one needs to carry one's air supply with them in order to participate in the sport ? I'd never feel comfortable attempting to be; 'at one with the sea' ! We humans were never anatomically designed to gallivant around underwater ! That's not to say those of us who like to push the boundaries of human endeavour might not have any fear of scuba activities ?

Another contributor herein mentioned that some people who play and follow cricket, aren't aware that there are those who consider cricket as a somewhat feminist or 'sissy' sport ? Well, I don't know about that. When you're at the crease and a 'quickie' sends one down at you, at c 120 - 140kph, you very quickly realise it's not a game for the 'limp wristed' sportsperson ? A 'six stitcher' is one hard little puppy, believe me !

Thank you SALTPETRE for your contribution.

And good afternoon to you FOXY...

I'm so glad to hear that you like this little topic, which is meant to be 'easy going' and a complete departure from the hard slog of politics and politicians. And it's true, we're persistently being assailed by either State of Federal governments, all telling us what's good and bad for the population, and in reality, it's mostly just a lot of ho-hum when you boil it all down ? So it's time for a bit of light discussion I thought.

I'm also very sorry to hear that your most recent procedure was not very successful. Then perhaps your next treatments that are planned for February and March next, may prove to be far more favourable anyway FOXY ? Though, I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for you to prepare oneself to have this invasive procedure, and it turns out not to be quite as successful as first predicted ?

All that remains to be said - All your many, many, friends that proliferate this Forum, hope that your planned 'procedures' will be a roaring success in February and March next ! Take care dear FOXY.

There is only one true spot that requires supreme concentration, dexterity, agility, years of training to reach competency, self sacrifice and total commitment. A sport not tainted by drug cheats, or result rigging. A sport yet to be sullied by organised crime or participant cheating. A sport for all the family, a sport the community appreciates and admires, a real socially acceptable sport. One that caters for all ages and all levels of ability. What sport am I referring to, you gussed it...DWARF TOSSING of course! The last truly inspirational sport left on the planet. I known some of you are going to come back with the line "But Paul, doesn't Jelly Wrestling also fit that bill, yes I'll have to agree on that one."

o sung wo I have a Christmas/sporting tale to tell.
I have said before I am from a VERY large family, we once sat 37 down for the hot Christmas dinner.
I have not yet had my wish, sea food and salad, I as eldest inherit the need for the traditional.
Only one wing of the tribe here this year mate who is also my brother and his.
We will feast for two days and its not the food I look forward to.
Not the few too many beers.
Its to sit with him and his teenaged kids and watch both the start of the Hobart race and the Boxing day test.
The phone will run hot as family, strangely having the Christmas fare I beg for ring.
Sport will invade even that, we follow different football teams and that makes for insults in the Aussie way harmless fun.
Not a lonely old man old but content, wives of some of the family, maybe rightfully so, have kept us not so close.
But even in OUG s Christ Mass joy we unbelievers will have a wonderful time may each and every one of us do just that go the Aussies too.
We should never forget the part sport plays in Australian life and the great mateship it brings us.

Thinking about the thread & it's title, I think the best sport, so the best one to excel at, is equestrian sport.

It, & perhaps shooting, is the only major sport where men & women compete on a totally equal footing, with equal chance of winning.

As an old instructor once told a class at an Eventing school, "it is not just knowing how to ask your horse to do what you want it to do that wins in Eventing, it is knowing how to convince your horse that that is what he wants to do".

Here ladies have a considerable head start. In my experience, they have been practicing that skill, from the moment they first net a boy.

Besides, have you ever noticed what great figures horse riding ladies have?

I have noticed Hasbeen but while every one has every right to the choice in sports I could not watch such events.
Once at a country camp draft found picking who was far too drunk to ride any thing was the only interesting thing.
Ambo saw my mind and told me he could not wait for some one to break a leg so he could leave!
Bloke opening the gate to let the cattle out, after about 20 beers set the ambo free after being kicked on falling under one.

Hi there FOXY...

I totally agree with your remarks concerning the humanity and kindness that emanates from our friend, ONE UNDER GOD. One could do a lot worse than have this gentleman in your corner, such is his empathy and compassion.

G'day there BELLY...I fully concur with all that you say about the benefits of sport !

I too recall Christmas with family, and with those of our family who didn't wish to enjoy it with us ? Going on duty, when everyone else was settling in for the cricket on Boxing Day. Our collective tummies full to the brim, post a magnificent Christmas Day luncheon, while I had to remain 'dry' before starting work on a 3.00 to 11.00 shift ?

Though, while I had to work, I did enjoy a warm family get together as part of Christmas. But driving around Redfern, seeing these poor lonely buggers, friendless, staggering around Eveleigh and Caroline Streets, drunk as lords on cheap plonk, yelling abuse at us...makes you realize BELLY how lucky we are to spend Christmas, even part of Christmas, with loved ones, and with someone who loves and cares for us.

Life can be bloody cruel I reckon. When we're deprived of the usual things we take for granted eh ? You're correct when you say;
'...we should never forget the part sport plays in Australian life, and the great mateship it brings us...' BELLY, you are soooooo RIGHT my friend.

I don't know much about campdrafting Belly. Rodeo is an entirely different thing to what I have been involved in. It is more from cattle raising & practical horsemanship.

I was more involved at local pony, & adult club level, until my eldest became fairly serious about Dressage, Show jumping & Eventing. She could have gone on with the Olympic training squad, but could not do that & still achieve the level she needed in Math & Physics to get into the university courses she wanted. She chose to study.

I can't say I was sorry, serious Eventing is quite dangerous. I was worried, & her mother near a nervous wreck when she was competing at top level.

Our quite brilliant stallion was retired about 3 years before he would have reached his peak, & since has done nothing other than learn how to eat the flesh of a mango seed, without getting the bitter inner seed.

He has been with us from 6 months to 27 years, & won't be around much longer, we lost his younger sister last month. I am going to really miss him when he goes.

HI there HASBEEN...

By 'eventing' do you mean the ceremonial equestrian events that are practiced as an Olympic event, and where the ladies and gentleman competitors wear a type of formal attire ? Despite not knowing anything at all about the ritual or rules of the sport, I enjoy watching, for sure. The horse and rider appear as one as they navigate around the course. There's a simply beauty too, almost a 'calm' that strikes me about the sport.

I remember a chap by the name of Andrew HOY from Holbrook, NSW won a Gold Medal during the Sydney (I think?) Olympics. Also various members of the Royal Family eg HRH Prince ANNE was an Olympic Competitor at one time ?

You also mentioned a Stallion you'd reared from 6 months and is now 27 years - Pardon my total ignorance, what is the average lifespan of a stallion ? Is there any significant difference between mares, stallions and geldings in terms of longevity ? I've heard that an Oz brumby has a considerably longer lifespan than 'tamed' horses ? I realize the ridiculousness of these questions, but if you don't ask, you'll never know !

The most ghastly thought associated with any animal that I'd grown close to, is their ultimate loss. That is a prospect that I cannot bear to confront under any circumstances.

Many thanks HASBEEN

PS: You've been around a bit for a Naval Aviator, or should I say, you've done a lot of positive things with your life, haven't you !

Hi o sung. Dressage is that bit where they wear formal attire, & compete in a 20 by 60 meter arena. It usually takes 6 to 10 years to get a horse to Olympic standard, & takes great skill to train them, & then reproduce their best on that one day.

Eventing is a 3 day event, with dressage the first day, followed by a quite severe load of work leading to the cross country. This is about 7 kilometers ridden at high speed, [but not a race], with over 40 quite large difficult & daunting jumps along the way.

The third day, to show the horse is still fit, there is a round of showjumping. This is not at the highest level, but is still pretty difficult. It takes a very good, but also very versatile horse to be good at all 3 disciplines, & very good & patient riders to train them to that level.

Locally our clubs run one day events, which are minor events involving the same disciplines, but much shorter cross country phase.

Small horses & ponies can make it into their 30s, but few thoroughbreds get past 25 or so. Our stallion is doing very well, but can't have much longer. My belief is that most brumbies, in the wild, have a fairly hard life, rather than a long one.

They may have developed a hardiness that gives them a long life in captivity.

Yes o sung wu, I've had an interesting life, but not really by choice. It has sort of driven me, rather than the other way around.

I was chucked out of the navy when a back injury was judged unfit for carrier arrested landings.

I finished my BSc, & was happily in the plastics industry, doing a bit of hobby sailing & motor racing, when my employer discovered my racing. I was told to give that up, as I was too valuable to turn up dead one Monday. I quit of course.

I established a suspension tuning business, which morphed into an exchange reconditioned components business.

When my marriage broke down, I bought a yacht, & lived on that at marinas in Sydney. The yacht was very slow, so I sold it, & bought a very fast one.

When I realised I was not the next world champion, I gave up motor racing, sold the business, & wondered what to do next. A mate said I was always talking about a cruise up to the reef, & now was the perfect time. He was right so I went.

When I got to Cairns I really could not see much point in returning to Sydney, so I got a 12 month visa for PNG, & the Solomons, & kept going north.

I discovered my visa included a work permit, unplanned, so I did, all sorts of work. Had a fair little business building jetties for isolated plantations.

8 years later, I felt a need to walk down streets, where people looked like me, & came back. [They tricked me with that one didn't they?].

Met a lady, got involved in tourist boats. 8 years later we had 2 kids, & sick of tourists, went cattle breeding. That was stupid. Never try to do anything useful like producing food.

Got head hunted back into manufacturing, for another 12 years before retirement.

My life had no plan, it just happened. Perhaps I have a low threshold of boredom & can't stick, but in many ways, I had no say in it.

Thank you HASBEEN for a most comprehensive answer to many of my questions, it's greatly appreciated.

'Eventing' per se, sounds to be a very demanding series of tests or serials, for both horse and rider. The third day appears to be the most difficult I should think, with the horse being asked to complete a jumping circuit, though not quite as hard as normal jumping, nevertheless quite challenging anyway given the poor beast has already had two days of 'trying' competition ? Even before being asked to deliver once more, on the show jumping circuit.

'Eventing' to me, suggests it's also a very social activity as well, with both human and horse interacting impeccably together, without any impediment whatsoever !

Wouldn't it be great if we humans could emulate, that of horse and rider, without the need to first, negotiate, mediate, and arbitrate without ending up in these interminable altercations of little significance ?

Thanks Mate, I appreciate your response.

Continued.

It was the same with the stallion. During the cattle breeding phase, we were minding some brood mares for friends who had sold their property, while they looked for a larger one. He was a colt at foot of one of their mares.

For some reason he took to following me around whenever I was in or even near that paddock. When the daughter who did the horse breeding had an accident it changed their plans.

They were going to geld the colts, & sell the lot. One thing led to another. I had no use for a stallion, but he had become such a mate, I bought him, & kept him entire. I really had no idea of why I bought him, except we liked each other.

I had broken him, & done some light jump training & flat work with him when my daughter decided she wanted him. He was 6 & ready for serious training, & she was 11, & boy were they a match. He would do anything she asked, & she was good enough to set him up perfectly to do what she asked.

He hasn't been ridden now for years, but no matter where he is, he always comes when called. Now if only I could get the dogs to do that.

weell sadly..yesterday..i..had had enough..he barked..outside..he barked inside..you know them annoying..short sharp expectant yips
so i put him into...the washing machine..i thought a bit of real stress..would teach..him the difference.

that didnt work..so i 'thought'..ok put some pressure on..so dropped on top of..him..the dog blanket..closed the lid..went..outside..and sure enough..he started again..so i grabbed a glass of water..and created a wet dog..and sat.

it took around an/other minute..and i heard a single yap..i felt my heard mind[anger beast rise up..within..me..but as a stepped up..on the squeaky step..i heard the voice saying..he is expecting..you to come..so stopped dead...silence..so i stepped back..the squeak..silence..

so sat down..and enjoyed the blessed silence..anyhow that lasted all of 8 minutes..and i thought..oh/no..what if i killed the little yapper
so i returned to/the scene of the crime..and there was the little half wet blackdog looking up..at me..i hugged that little blackdog..and thought..let him bark all he likes.

and he hasnt barked since.
[ohok wheni got them exited..playing with him..later twice
but he dont bark at nighlyshadows..of the night..no more

now the gold one barks
she is too big for the washing machine
as she is the size of a pony..maybe horse whispering?

john lennons bagism comes to mind
but i notice..the more one dog barks..the less..the rest do

she just .started again..
[how do you fit a pony..into a washing machine?]

Hasbeen you have added much to the thread and I found it interesting.
My life was in the end not a planned one.
Like yours I drifted in and out of jobs as things changed.
Once ran a small business with 5 workers and left that, it made money but I have always thought if you love your job you have life worked out.
That did not remain the case in that small but profitable endeavor.
No regrets in fact would do it all over again.
And interesting side issue my sporting past and need to put in at work gave me reserves to fight illness.

G'day BELLY & HASBEEN...

BELLY...you say your life has not turned out quite as you've planned ? I dunno mate, from the little I've picked up about you, over the last couple of years - seems you've packed-in a helluva lot of stuff with your many work experiences on country hwys, together with your vast occupational experiences supervising pretty hardened men. And THAT'S NOT EASY ! Not discounting many of your sporting achievements either. And probably the most challenging of all, defeating some of your more intractable illnesses ! Belly, you and I are of similar age I reckon (70's) you've 'crammed' many many, fascinating and gripping events into your short time here, on terra firma !

Chronologically, you, me and HASBEEN, as well as many other participants on this Site (probably), are all 'birds of similar plumage' old man ?

HASBEEN...I'm not in the habit of dissecting ones occupational antecedents but; as you'd not been able to land on a carrier due to a medical impairment of your back, did you not consider for a moment continuing to pursue a flying career without such tough physical determinations ? Even reaching, 'landing on a carrier' stage, your flying ability would've been quite advanced ? Or was it a case of Naval Aviation, or nothing ? That I could understand HASBEEN.

I did look at airline flying o sung wu, but was told to forget it. Ansett reckoned an airline could not afford to employ a pilot who had been passed as not fit for flying, even if it was only carrier landings that I was unfit for.

All there was left back then was crop dusting, which did not appeal at all. It did take a couple of years for me to stop looking up every time I heard an aircraft overhead.

I always figured you'd knocked about a but Belly, & had an interesting life because of it. I'd say a large percentage of us ended up where we did by pure chance. I rather like it being that way. Wouldn't it be dreadful to put all the time study & effort into becoming a doctor, finding you hated it, but owed so much you had to keep at it.

When you lead lives like ours, you don't end up rich in money, but it is a hell of a ride, well worth experiencing.

It works both ways. I have a mate who started out laboring in a council concrete road/curbing gang. He ended up one of the biggest concrete contractors in Oz. He could buy & sell half of Sydney, but remained true to his first love, Home built motorcycle engined small hill climb car He proved you don't have to chop & change to have a fun life, but some of us don't get to chose.

HASBEEN...

That'd be tough I reckon. Still, as evidenced by your yachting voyages up the coast to PNG and north, sounds like a pretty good unguent for failing to realise your flying career ? Plus a very useful degree, your own business with financial responsibilities. You know, there'd be many a politician, who's not had a fifth as much exposure to the business world as you. Yet they're running our country. Some might say into 'the ground'. I'll not go there.

That's not accounting for your motor racing activities. Plus preparing the cars, suspension, porting and polishing, lifting compression, having the head down, double valve springs, fitting extractors - where do you stop ?

One line sums me up...Army & coppers. I've never done a days work, produced or built anything, balanced a budget...nothing.

Many thanks for your contribution HASBEEN.

Dear o sung wu,

It's not true that you've never built anything.
You build a happy positive atmosphere every time
you post on this forum. You lift our spirits
skyward, and make us smile. And that dear soul is
an achievement in itself. You are an amazing soul!
This forum is all the better for having you in it
and I'm sure everyone else feels the same way.

Hi there FOXY and HASBEEN...

Thank you both for your very kind words, and I do appreciate them, absolutely ! Still, I'm a realist. When I was working (speaking figuratively) - whenever someone sees me coming, I'm viewed with either alarm, or my presence is detested. Rarely welcomed, despite the fact the party concerned, is often the originator (complainant) of the call that initially sought my presence ?

In domestics matters, the number of instances that I could've cut my own ineffectual tongue out, on the number of occasions I've had to say to some poor, highly distressed woman,'...there's nothing we can do...', '...or call us if he returns...' ? Mostly, when we leave, we leave a complete mess, more often emotionally much worse. Moreover, the offending spouse is often, nearly 'white hot with anger', because we were called in the first place, and seen to be interfering with their private affairs.

It's said and it's quite true, a mans home is his castle. NO lousy copper should ever be permitted to enter the home without his or hers specific invitation, and then intrude into the family's private business.

Again, thank you both FOXY and HASBEEN, I really appreciate your insight and kindness.......But, I am a realist, definitely NOT a builder, more a destroyer.

Dear o sung wu,

If you were a destroyer you wouldn't care as much
as you do.

And destroying some things, such as criminal gangs, is a positive contribution.

Taking drunk drivers off the road or catching fraudsters & thugs, are very positive for the community.

o sung wo, takeit5 easy on your self mate.
No crawling here not my style but no community can afford to pay a good cop what he/she is truly worth.
We have an anti cop culture but it is blind to truth.
Your job was not to beg us to behave and some times still the good kick in the ring works best.
I in my time responding to road trauma events saw the very best in police and ambo uniforms.
And too the very worst in a police Sargent shirt.
I would rather remember the best.
A tip from an old union official.
Remember if some of us who take pleasure in pulling down others had fools like them in their work place doing what they do to them a light of intelligent understand may flash in front of their eyes.

Good afternoon to you, BELLY and HASBEEN...

Thank you both for your sage advice, and I do appreciate from where it comes. It's true, coppers have to make their own bed and lie in it, and occasionally we receive some genuine thanks from those of whom we 'try' to help.

After school we all have to make a momentous decision about what vocational path we wish to travel, and it does befall us all as to what career we choose to pursue. Rarely can we blame others, it's our choice. And I selected the Armed Services. Why in heavens name did I elect discharge after my initial 6 years, I'll never ever know ? Probably the worst mistake in judgement I've ever made ?

But I did, so I swapped my khakis for blue. From a soldier to a bastard in most people's eyes, particular those of my (beloved) late Father ? Though a teetotaller all his 88 years of life, he held NO respect for police at all ? Though never experiencing anything negative from them (not even a traffic matter), he nevertheless, was always quite derisive of anything complimentary that was said about them. I do recall, when I was very young, we had a distant relative who was of a reasonably high rank, in the job ? My memory of him is scant, perhaps therein is the answer to my Dad's intractable attitude ?

BELLY and HASBEEN my good friends, I have no illusions at to what sort of footprint I'll leave when I finally bid goodbye to this mortal world of ours, no illusion at all.

Again, thank you both immensely. Wow, I'm completely off Topic. Profound apologies to our moderators !
