The natural enemy: Serena Williams and the sporting umpire : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 12/9/2018

Should it matter this much? A wealthy, successful individual expressed fury at the most popular object of vitriol in any sport.

Don't analyse players - they're just playing a game, nothing more serious. There are rules and procedures. All demand "sportsmanship".

tantrum throwing at the highest degree even though she was caught out cheating. Yep just like the getup clowns and the Hilary tantrum throwers she digs in and gets the support of the swamp. I mean if an overpaid, self entiltled black woman is wrong then it certainly exposes themselves. Identity politics at it very worse!

A digusting performance by a black woman who has been lead by weak white people to believe that she can act in a disgusting manner just because she is black woman.

That cartoon was over the top just as her tatrum was over the top. It's a case of two wrongs still not getting it right. All it does is give the opportunists another jab in the arm.

I've always loved Serena and her never ever quit attitude she takes to her game. And like the champion she is, picked herself up off of the floor and back into the match in almost every game she's played.

And the idol of many a young player, none more so than a 20 something Naomi Osaka who played her heart out and beat a below-par Serena fairly and squarely.

Yes, Serena lost it. A did her dumb coach whose activities and the point it cost Serena, also cost her the match? He should have been the only person there to receive the public bollocking?

The rules that Serena violated/flouted are the same for everyone, be they black white or brindle male or female.

The umpire is in an invidious position. And could/should receive more support from technology.

My heart bleeds for poor Naomi, whose feat and day was most cruelly ruined by the unsportsmanlike display from Serena, who failed to intimidate the other player or the professional and entirely impartial umpire.

Serena, may need to decide where she goes now and whether her tennis comes before family or whether the family comes first, and settles for doubles or something she can cope with, with her current fitness level?

It's tennis, for god's sake. Nobody cares.
