War-war when jaw-jaw fails? : Comments

By Benjamin Herscovitch, published 18/5/2012

A further injection of realpolitik to the international community's response to the Syrian situation is required.

This war-mongering is almost beyond comprehension.
"Syrian troops continue to fire on civilians"- there is ample evidence for terrorist groups.
"reconsider its decisions to neither intervene militarily nor arm the Free Syrian Army."- this is already being done (though not yet NATO bombing).
Yes, it is a nasty regime, but outside armed intervention that will precipitate a very bloody civil war must be avoided at all costs. Leslie

Depending on what you read, there is just as much, indeed far more, firing going in the other direction.

As with Libya, we are getting a hopelessly one-sided propaganda deluge to justify the military overthrow of yet another regime that is an irritant to the West. This propaganda deluge should be treated with the scepticism it deserves. The West already has too many destroyed countries and far too much blood on its hands to embark on yet another foreign 'humanitarian' intervention.

Killarney, you have probably seen the reports eg Washington Post's article today, "Syrian rebels get influx of arms with gulf neighbors’ money, U.S. coordination"; and among many others, "Brookings Announces Next Move in Syria: War," which reported that "by the US policy think-tank Brookings Institution's own admission, the Kofi Annan six-point peace plan in Syria was merely a ploy to buy time to reorganize NATO's ineffective terrorist proxies and provide them the pretext necessary for establishing NATO protected safe havens from which to carry out their terrorism ..." It beggars belief that any civilized person can crusade for "humanitarian intervention". Leslie

As I always say, follow the money.

In this case, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are providing most of the funding to the so called opposition forces, more like mercenaries for hire.

The CIA, through their black budget is also heavily involved.

Reason: A placated Syria removes the final stumbling block to harness Iran, vis, access and control of the light sweet crude oil Iran holds in the ground.

Pretty simple really, no MSM will give you the truth, take off the blinkers and you will soon realise this is US hegemony and UN/IMF intervention at its best

Tanks and artillery against small arms?
Apologists for Assard all but condoning his ongoing brutal suppression, with all possible means; including the torture and brutish rape of murdered minors.
All apparently acceptable for the Assard apologists posting here?
Eventually we reach a point, when the ethnic cleansing or elimination of civilians reaches a point of no return!
We simply can't sit on our collective hands while yet another mass murdering psychopath, wrecks his terrible vengeance on those who oppose him.
If the Syrians could have free and fair elections?
However, there is absolutely no doubt that somewhere around 90-95% of the population would send Assard and his murderous family packing; or, serving the irrepressible demands of justice at the end of a rope after the highly improbable free and fair elections!
Impossible, given no dictator in history has peacefully surrendered control to the oppressed! The only way this situation can be now resolved; is with all the military help that can be directed into the hands of the opposing masses.
Heavier anti tank weapons and a no fly zone, would be a useful start.
Many will cry foul and talk about a bloody civil war; all while ignoring the current on the ground bloody massacre of thousands of entirely innocent non combatant unarmed civilians.
Who might as well die well, with a rifle in their hands and opposing vicious tyranny, as at the hands of brutal mass murderers?
Who will make sure they die very badly, slowly and painfully; or, if they somehow survive the unbelievable brutality, will likely wish they were dead?
The time for talking and endless broken promises, has run out! Rhrosty.

Rhrosty.
But that could stem the flow of refugees to our shores. The do-gooders won't like that.
