The non-Labor parties are facing a crisis of talent and of attracting and keeping it to fight Labor effectively.

Very interesting article. In a nutshell, Labor is far superior in the organisation of parasitic behaviour on a wide and deep scale; at arranging for getting a great variety of snouts into the public trough in a thousand different ways and over a long-time scale. No wonder their ideology constantly calls for aggrandisement of government's powers, personnel and budgets.

“Although enjoying swings of more than 7 per cent, the Liberal Party at the recent Tasmanian and South Australian elections failed to win government from Labor despite their long-term incumbencies and scandals.”

And, not mentioned, despite the fact that the Opposition in South Australia gained 52% of the vote and, again not mentioned, the fraudulent how-to-vote cards handed out at booths in seats where Labor politicians OK’d them.

In three elections in SA, now, the Liberal Opposition has had a clear majority of the votes but, thanks to a gerrymander a la Bjelke-Petersen’s gerrymander in Queensland, Labor is still in power although a clear majority of South Australians did not want them. In Queensland, the gerrymander was treated as the scandal it was; in South Australia, it is quietly accepted.

Perhaps the gerrymander aiding Labor is one of the reasons why the threadbare Mike Rann is so much against an I.C.A.C. for the state. What would an anti-corruption body reveal in SA that Rann is so worried about?

As for the shonky (but not illegal) how-to-vote cards, Labor goons dressed in blue shirts with ‘Vote for your family’ on them, handed out cards also blue, that directed people who were voting for Family First to give their preferences to Labor. The whole of Australia would have heard about it, but briefly, Rudd didn’t give his usual public gushing congratulations to a state Labor Premier; the state Labor secretary, when quizzed, replied that the morality of his stunt was for a philosopher, not him to ponder, and to their credit, some Labor candidates refused to have the dodgy cards handed out in their electorates. The Labor machine, included Rann and his right hand stooges in cabinet have carefully avoided discussing the matter.

Preferential voting (which should be cease), a continuing gerrymander, and shonky Labor practises are what defeated the Liberals in South Australia.

I do wish authors would say what they really mean. Why say what something is not; why not say what something just is? 'Non-Labor parties' is nearly as bad a description as 'non-academic staff' when academics and others of similar ilk describe groups of general staff or professional staff or technical staff. If the author means just Liberals and just Nationals why not just say it? How about 'conservatives'? There are many more parties in the political spectrum that do not fit with these two or Labor and would be much better for the future of Australia, for example Socialist Alliance.

The appointment of Christine Nixon really sums up Labour's professionalism. And don't forget the laying of pink bats. Do these uni professors get paid to write such crap.

Have to agree with the prior posters here. What the hell is he talking about? Non-Labour? ie, the Greens, Socialists, DLP, Australia First. No. He means the Coalition. I win with nine letters.

Er, yes, ALP = snouts in trough.

The main function of the anti-Labor parties is to keep Labor out of office and to support their business bankrollers' capital accumulation schemes. So,it's not surprising that they usually don't have the ideological cement to hold party members together out of office, apart from those politicians in the loonier neo-liberal factions.
