Once again you are trying to muddy the waters with tons of irrelevant waffle. I am sure that Essendon did a far more thorough review of Thorburn than your 5-minute google search.

Your timeline is also wrong. Thorburn had already been appointed by Essendon with a signed contract that did not exclude him from working with the church. The issue only arose when some snowflake dredged up some posts from church members from over a decade ago long before Thorburn even joined the church.

Contractually Essendon had no right to demand that he relinquish his position at the church, and in forcing him to resign they put themselves in a very dangerous legal position. Not only have they made their names mud, but if Thorburn decides to sue, they could be in the hole for a chunk of cash.

There were two matters raised about Thorburn and his suitability for lead the Essendon football club, his record at the NAB and his chairmanship of a fringe church.

The fact that you have chosen to get your knickers in a knot over the second does not make the first irrelevant at all. Rather it is a significant part of the issues both Essendon membership and the wider AFL community had with him.

The fact that the club was prepared to forgive his sins while at the helm of the NAB and give him an out, not forcing him to leave the church but just resign his chairmanship, was pretty forgiving in the end.

But he made his own choice which was completely and utterly up to him.
