when i think about the american experience with democracy, i usually think about california, occasionally massachusetts: places i have lived that are progressive, educated, and usually vote democrat.
but in fact arizona, a state so far to the right of american politics that they imagined barry goldwater could be president, is also very much motivated by democratic ideals. democracy is not left or right wing, it is just the expression of people's wish to determine their own destiny.
google 'direct democracy arizona', and see how things are done where men are men, and the first thing the men did was give the vote to women. this was probably a mistake..
