Pauline Hanson calls for Julie Bishop and Christopher Pyne's whopping $200,000-a-year pension to be scrapped - and claims the pair only quit politics to maximise their payouts

Pauline Hanson has renewed calls for lifelong parliamentary pensions of retiring federal politicians to be scrapped, describing the lucrative pay outs as a waste of taxpayers' money.

The One Nation leader expressed her outrage on social media at former foreign minister Julie Bishop's retirement benefit, which will see her pocket more than $210,000 a year when she leaves federal Parliament at the next election in May.

She also attacked Defence Minister Christopher Pyne, who will receive $140,000 a year from his time as a minister after he announced on Saturday he is quitting politics after 26 years.

Politicians elected before 2004 are entitled to a generous, lifelong parliamentary pension, which after the election will see a former minister still in his forties entitled to thousands of dollars a year from the public purse.

Former ministers will be receiving more than double Australia's average full-time salary of $82,400, without having to wait until the retirement age of 65 even though they could also be raking in cash as corporate directors.

'They're doing it tough and what makes me angry is that Julie Bishop, who is going to retire from parliament now after 19 years, is going to retire on over a $200,000 a year parliamentary pension,' she fumed in the Facebook video.

Ms Bishop, who was also the Liberal Party's deputy leader from 2007 to 2018, is set to receive at least $210,000 a year from her time served as cabinet and junior minister, based on a Department of Finance handbook for members of parliament elected before 2004.

That is 10 times the aged pension for a single person.

** Here it is **
Senator Hanson accused Ms Bishop of quitting before the next election to help her qualify for a more generous parliamentary pension.

'She's getting out now because [if] they end up in Opposition, it goes on the previous three years wages – which she'll lose about $70,000 a year,'

Many of us have objected to that for years & the Australian Conservatives' policies actually include a reduction of these perks.
It's up to the voters & especially the Labor supporters that we put a stop to these rorts.
So, this election will be a real case of getting the Govt we deserve.
Vote Labor & the show will worsen. Vote Liberal & the higher paid will gain but nothing will change for the rest of us. Vote for a strong third party & a strong chance of change can be a reality.

The only difference between politicians and non-political criminals who perpetrate scams against the public, is that if prosecuted and found guilty, the non-politician scammers can be locked up.

Guthrie got a 900000 payout after being sacked for incompetence. Now she is after more. The swamp is very very deep.

You're so right RUNNER when you say '...the swamp is very very deep...'; And I would add, '...full of treacherous snakes and crocodiles, all of whom are viciously snapping and biting for a more significant share of the Public's pie...'!

As I've said before and I'll repeat it. There should be a small detail of experienced police, dedicated to interdicting all crimes expressly committed by politicians. And where the indictment reflects one already established in Statute, the maximum punishment for that crime should be doubled; for politicians, including the automatic removal of all their political benefits as well

Come on fellers, it is worth it to be getting rid of a bunch of Turnbull trash. Paying even these exorbitant pensions will save us the billions these fools would have cost us if still in parliament, following Labor lite policies.

Yes it will be disgusting seeing Bishop pouncing around, knowing we have paid for what ever bit of fluff she is wearing, but still much less disgusting than having to admit she is a minister in our government.

Be thankful for small mercies.

These payouts and pensions are available to all politicians including ON, obviously one Nation sees them as excessive. If they come available to ON they must refuse the excessive amount. Maybe they can put a bill to fix payable amounts based on average incomes, or have an independent body fix politicians salaries, perks and pensions.

I tend to agree with Hasbeen. We can't do much about the pensions, and it's good to see the back of no hopers who will cost us less than they would have had they hung around longer.

After the next election, me thinks there will be more than Bishop and Pyne from the Coalition side lining up for a pension payout. How much would that total cock up, the Mad Monk from Warringah walk away with? I recall a big payout to Bronwyn Bishop, if it was five cents it would have been five cents too much.

After the stopping tens of thousands illegals and getting rid of the idiotic breathing tax hopefully much more than Rudd/Gillard/Turnbull and other country wreckers.

runner,
Even though I fully agree with that, I still maintain Australian public servants' salaries are a major cause of our economic woes. They're simply too high & they're totally unjustified & unwarranted.

Got this in an email just now:

If this is true it can only be described as sickening. Disgraceful !

Six elected members of the federal government have made the decision not to run in the upcoming election! This is an exceptionally high number compared to previous elections. Some of them tell us that it is for family reasons, others for their desire to serve their fellow citizens in other fields and some for other laudable reasons to make us feel for them. Methinks there might just be a more pertinent reason for this exodus.

In 2015 a change in the pension conditions for MP's mandated that the age of full retirement for an MP, having served a minimum of all of 6 years, will no longer be 55 years but will change to 65 years as of the coming election. This means any MP who has served 6 years or longer and is not yet 65 can retire on the benefit from the present pension scheme entitling them to draw a government pension of over $100,000/year for the years until they are 65 as well as beyond. For an elected MP approaching 55 who does not stand for reelection, that means $1 million that they would not receive should they run and win again. There is also a severance premium (between $80,000 and $125,000) upon his/her departure.

You can now better understand all these sudden "family emergencies", appreciate the newfound desire to advance a career in a government job or a committee of some sort and have two or more salaries (and possibly two or more pensions).

Not bad as a justification to not run . The best pension scheme designed and voted in for politicians by politicians but paid for by each of us. Democracy, for the people by the people. I think not
