Recently on 60 Minutes on Channel Nine, a Mr "Joe Donor" was interviewed about sperm donation for women internationally who cannot have children.

He was told he was "putting women's lives at risk". Surely though if people are involving themselves in an act like sperm donation, through freedom of choice, these people must take responsibility, including women.

Children are put last, through an individuals selfish desire to have children, not recognising an individuals role in society re their inability to have children. These people also do not consider the future issues placed on the lives of others they are involved with re creation.

Sperm donation laws vary per country and people can be paid to donate. Should sperm donor children have the right to know about their donor internationally?

The children should have the right to know, they might be being done out of a considerable inheritance, both monetary and historical.

Then there is the matter of inheritable medical conditions which it is not only the individual's right, either legal or moral, to know but also any future partner

There should be no sperm donations in the first place. Runner is right: there are kids to be adopted. How any woman can accept - or even want - sperm from a stranger who likes to be paid to wank into a receptacle is is beyond all reason.

Hear hear runner, I could not agree more. In Australia its still very difficult to adopt children. Is it still a fact they wont let people over 35 adopt?

In my extended Maori family, children being taken on by "Aunties" was/is very common practice. My wife's youngest sister was raised by her oldest sister. A poor family with 13 children. A niece in NZ is raising three kids of her cousins. If there is a family problem of neglect, drugs or alcohol etc, and kids are involved there is never a problem finding new parents. Call a family meeting, state your case, and the elders make the decision. Now days it often done officially through child welfare, and the government does recognise as a cultural thing this practice, and after the necessary checks the handover takes no time at all.

Gee, runner my wife going on 70 still says if there is ever any child in need, "we" would have no hesitation taking that child in. Giving family support is considered normal, and goes without question. I'm a bit more circumspect with people than "T", its the Pakeha attitude in me verses the Maori way in her at times, but we always sore it out.
