Australian Democracy Diminished But Not Gone Yet

Most Australian commentators, for whom Turnbull was the acceptable face of the centre-right, are wailing about a crisis in democracy, as they usually do when they lose a vote. But, in fact, Australian democracy, though seriously wounded, is still functioning. The change from Turnbull to Morrison was quick and orderly. No armed conflict, and only one big ego bruised.

Turnbull’s defenders (and Turnbull himself) blame everybody but Turnbull. They blame the right wing press, such as it is, talk back radio hosts, and Tony Abbott. Even though Blind Freddy could see that Turnbull’s reduction of Abbott’s healthy majority to one seat showed that Turnbull and his Black Hand gang were turning rancid. It was at that time perfectly clear that Turnbull was out of step with the party he was supposed to be leading. Hell, he was into ditching the Queen for a republic, a believer in the climate change scam, and a driver of homosexual 'marriage’, just to name a few of his sins that he revealed to the public. Given that most of his supporters voted Green/Labor, it's a wonder the man got a second term at all.

Turnbull's refusal to do anything about electricity prices and the Paris affair, or discuss mass immigration were probably the game changers. Policies that Morrison needs to get cracking on. Although, now that we are to have a by-election, thanks to Turnbull, Morrison might not get that chance.

Traitor or planned by turncoat.

The betrayal of the Turnbulls: Malcolm's hedge fund manager son backs LABOR in Wentworth after the former PM jetted off to New York instead of helping campaign in his old seat

Alex Turnbull: 'Best bang for the buck you'll get in political donations in your life'
Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull will fly to New York tomorrow for a six-week holiday

Malcolm Turnbull's son has publicly backed Labor, as the former prime minister jets off to New York ahead of a crucial by-election triggered by his resignation.

Alex Turnbull spoke out in supported of Labor candidate Tim Murray, and said voting for his father's old party was impossible in good conscience.

The Singapore-based hedge fund manager on Saturday used social media to declare Mr Murray was great value for political donations.

He wrote to Mr Murray's Twitter post: 'best bang for the buck you'll get in political donations in your life' and sharing the link to his donation page.

'Tight race, tight margin for government, big incremental effect whatever happens. If you want a federal election now this is the means by which to achieve it,' Mr Turnbull added.

Alex Turnbull told Fairfax earlier this week it was 'hard to back a Labor guy, but not Tim' and it was 'impossible' to vote for the Coalition 'in good conscience'.

Some people are under the delusion that Abbott would have somehow won the last election. At least Turnbull's personal popularity gave the government a much-needed bounce in the polls and managed to (just) scrape over the line at the election. Abbott was headed for disaster and the Liberals knew it from their own internal polls.

Turnbull's ultimate undoing was his lack of clear vision, typically bad judgement and his need to appease both sides of his divided party.
He was just too gutless to stand up to any of them.

Meanwhile Abbott was indeed white-anting him and making announcements through his media whores every time Turnbull left the country.

Now Turnbull's gone Abbott magnaimously announced "the age of the political assassin is over".

If that's not an admission of what he was doing, I don't know what is.

He won't be coming back, no matter how some wish it were so.

I think they were hoping for the Killer Potato as a puppet leader with Abbott as the power behind the throne. Unfortunately, the Liberals were canny enough to realise that 'Ol Spuddy is electoral poison.

I still don't think Morrison will get them across the line. I almost feel sorry for the poor bugger, it's all gone a bit Admiral Dönitz for him.

And then I remember it's Scott Morrison we're talking about and immediately stop feeling sorry for him.

It seems that some people on this board can see no better than Blind Freddy! Turnbull didn't destroy Abbott's healthy majority; Abbott had already lost the support of the voters. Turnbull not only saved the Libs from electoral catastrophe (as Rudd did for Labor by dethroning Gillard) but also salvaged enough to win the election.

Since then, of course, they've lost more Newspolls than they did under Abbott. Yet those same polls showed Turnbull as preferred PM.

It's not clear how much of this discrepancy is due to deliberate sabotage from Abbott's faction trying to ensure they lost more Newspolls under Turnbull. But it hardly matters now. They've had their way, followed by their worst Newspoll drubbing yet.

Still, at least Alex Turnbull has enough integrity to favour the needs of the country over those of the bankers!
