Dear JF AAus,

Here's the ABC's - one explanation for why fish
are so expensive in Australia. It seems that
people prefer to buy fish from overseas than
our local cheaper varieties.

Anyway - its worth a read:

One professional shark fisho in my area grossed over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in twelve months. That is from a small boat with minimal technology.

Live shark finning is alive and well. I observe finless sharks on occasions.

Shark fin soup keeps the Chinese rooting along in the hope of catching up on the consequences of lost females from the one child policy.
(And a tear for all those lost babies put out at the front gate for the wild dogs to eat).

Estimated to be at least seventy million sharks slaughtered globally PA, for the fin trade.

That's just the shark story. Too depressing to go further into ocean ecosystems sustainability...

Hi Foxy,

I consider that link you posted involves a virtual snow job by ABC news about reality of fish and fishing these days.

Truth is Australian salmon are recirded in history as fish in teeming schools that used to blacken Australian coast waters, but not these days. Yrs there are considerable numbers remaining, because to most people they are inedible, their flesh too strong, sickening.

Absolutely most of the quality fish have gone and those that remain fetch a big price.
Example; Sir James Kirby and his mate used to go weekend fishing off Maroubra Beach Sydney and would return with 400 pounds of snapper. That's about 200 kilo which at todays $50 plus per kilo is $10,000.00 just from a weekends sport fishing.

Most shops dont keep and sell red snapper because now it is so scarse most customers cannot afford to buy it.

the abc is very very very selective on what they report and what they don't. Unfortunately one needs to look at a number of other sources to get a tiny bit of balance.

Dear runner,

I think there's the issue of funding as well.
Government cut-backs certainly don't help.

ABC & Integrity in the same sentence! You've got to be kidding.
