1. to have a direct vote for each minister of state?

so that you could 'cherrypick' the best management.

2. to have government carried out in public?

so the minister couldn't use public assets to reward his mates,

so problems could be exposed before much damage was done.

3. to have a written constitution, establishing the citizens as masters of their nation, with a bill of rights?

so that you could tell the world you are a citizen of a democracy, not a subject of a queen, and not a mug sheep on a politician's station.

1. "so that you could 'cherrypick' the best management" - gotta have decent folk in politics to start with.

2. In a way, yes. Some things are more effectively dealt with out of the public eye. A number of businesses that exposed their employees to the reasoning behind management decision-making have found this out the hard way.

3. "to have a written constitution" we have one, "establishing the citizens as masters of their nation" the requirement of compulsory voting kinda does this anyway, "with a bill of rights" - nope, too Yankeefied.

"so that you could tell the world you are a citizen of a democracy" I am and one with proper free speech too, "not a subject of a queen" I dont have a problem with this - it gives us a bit more dimension, "and not a mug sheep on a politician's station". You obviously dont know sheep very well. They are actually very wily and cunning (not nearly as dumb as the uninformed would have you think), and specialise in breaking away from the mob, particularly if you are trying to make them go somewhere they dont want to (through a gate, into a shed etc etc). They are also pretty good at pushing the boundaries and keeping their masters on their toes

Demos lives in a different world than the rest of us, a world that never existed and never will.
A world that asks man to care as much for others as he cares for himself.
A world that wants us to stop our hunter gatherer race to build the biggest Mac mansion in town.
And the wish for better leaders who after they gain power not change?
Yes we will just have to do with second best.
