Back to the topic on Media and Mass Shootings:

Quoting from the link given below of the American
Psychological Association -

"People who commit mass shootings in America tend to share
three traits - rampant depression, social isolation, and
pathological narcissism according to a paper presented at
the American Psychological Association's Annual Convention
that calls on the media to deny such shooters the fame they
seek."

"Mass shootings are on the rise and so is
media coverage of them." said Jennifer B. Johnston, PhD, of
Western New Mexico University. "At this point, can we determine
which came first? Is the relationship merely unidirectional:
More shootings lead to more coverage? Or is it possible that
more coverage leads to more shootings?"

"Johnston and her coauthor, Andrew Joy, BS, also of Western New
Mexico University reviewed data on mass shootings amassed by
media outlets, the FBI and advocacy organisation, as well as
scholarly articles, to conclude that ' media contagion' is
largely responsible for the increase in these often deadly
outbursts. They defined mass shootings as either attempts to kill
multiple people who are not relatives or those resulting in
injuries or fatalities in public places."

"The prevalence of these crimes has risen in relation to the
news media coverage of them and the proliferation of social
media sites that tend to glorify the shooters and downplay the
victims Johnston said."

wasn't it the abc recently who was paying that young muslim woman to say that Islam is the most feminist religion in the world. Thankfully she spat the dummy and left this nation however every bashed muslim woman must have been appalled by that statement. Certainly the abc's obsession with Catholic paedophile priests of 50 years ago while ignoring the masses of Indigenous kids being abused now shows you have damaging the press can be. Unfortunately our tax payer funded press is close if not the worst of the lot with its half truths and outright lies.

Here is a novel idea; If the United States was to introduce tougher gun laws, maybe, just maybe, they would see a decrease in the number of mass killings, and the media would have a lot less to report. Has anyone in America ever thought of that idea. Australia had a problem with mass murder on the scale of Las Vagus, it happened at Port Arthur Tasmania, but our Prime Minister John Howard acted, and brought in tough new gun laws, and lone behold the mass killings stopped. How strange the gun lobby must have thought, what a sheer coincidence.

Those of the political ilk of leoj, love to blame the media, particularly the public media such as the ABC and SBS for what they perceive as unwanted bias reporting. Nothing would suit them more than to control all media. In fact in their ideal world, government control of the media is essential Then you would get the 'right' facts. There would be no mass killings, well no news items that brought into question any possible government failures regarding such events. Just stories about how our Fearless Leader is working tirelessly night and day to keep us all safe and sound in Utopia Australia, Right leoj, that's how you would like it.

There is a fair bit of rain in SEQld and there could be local flooding. Now if there was widespread damage a Greens politician would suddenly appear. Not to commiserate with the sadly affected and never to help. But always to ambulance-chase. To try to score some cheap shots, 'It's coal mines' (Bob Brown) or similar, to get headlines. Never even appear at the site of devastation either - Greens are always safe somewhere else well distant.

LA: a disgusting array of ambulance-chasers dance in the blood of victims yet again and even before the victims are all located and transported to care, or to that other cold place.

Paul1405, you have a record of rushing to wrest shabby political capital out of any bloodied scene. Strange how you and your handlers always miss sad events like this,

What is sad, is the way the radical right pro gun lobby and those that support it, like the One Nation man leoj, one who is puffed up with nationalist zeal, supposedly condemn world atrocities, yet offer nothing in the way of a positive solution to the problems. In fact the leoj types are actively in favour of maintaining the status quo of inequality, and continually mouth cliched nonsense from the likes of the NRA, and others of the political far right.
What is sickening is leoj and his use of meaningless sanctimonious clap trap; "dance in the blood of victims"... ridiculous, that attitude is four fifths of what causes people to be victims in the first place! Really leoj, do you actually care about the victims in Somalia or Las Vegas? I don't believe you do, a bit of a "Google" and then you paste the shocking story on the forum, but offer nothing in the way of a positive solution. Sad very sad.
