'Once explained, parents at the $28,500/year school agreed with the principle that the day should be celebrated'

Just goes to show then rich can be just as dumbed down as anyone else.

Good schools know what good education is. They
have all the concepts. Unfortunately, one
cannot educate children on conceptions alone.
Children present problems which do not disappear.
There are situations which arise that must be
dealt with.

Situations that call for helpful and realistic
reactions. A school's and a teacher's response has
crucial consequences. It creates a climate of
compliance or defiance, a mood of contentment or
contention, a desire to make amends or to take
revenge. It affects the child's conduct and
character for better or for worse.

These are the facts of emotional life which make
teaching and learning possible or impossible.
At their best, teachers and schools recognise this
core truth. Learning is always in the present tense
and it is always personal.

Bullying is a huge problem in many schools. Now imagine
if you were a gay child? These schools have taken such
a positive step to celebrate the differences that exist
between children. Recognising individual differences
and teaching tolerance and acceptance is a positive
step in any child's education.
The children at those schools can only
benefit from this instead of ignoring the fact that
gay children do exist - they are making them feel safe and
welcome at their schools.
All I can say is BRAVO!

Most schools are now making a serious attempt to educate students to understand and accept gender diversity. Some of the old school sacred cows such as compulsory rugby for the boys, and home ed classes for the girls have well and truly become a thing of the past.

Although there are still schools, few in number, which are maintaining those ridiculous, anachronistic School Cadet Units, fortunately they too are disappearing rapidly. All will agree there is no place for the practice and parading of barbaric militarism through Cadet Units in our schools.

So a few students want to hijack the epilepsy recognition day for SSM. That's just sad.

Yeah, seems unlikely. Because Epilepsy Awareness Day is 26th of March.

And it's currently August.

Maybe they're trying to hijack Uruguayan Independence Day?

Thick educators might wake up one day and let kids be kids.
