When truth flies out the window, so does credibility. Truth is the innocent victim to corruption.
Every institution in the world is corrupt to the core, sport stands in the number one position on the podium of corruption though! Would it not be more honest to now accept that drugs have won the war, and simply accept the winner with the highest drug level to win. I think eventually, those honest sports purists who persist with a clean drug-free record, and do so with pride in their personal achievements, will be the winners. A new day will dawn! If Brazil couldn't afford the Games, then Greece most definitely could not afford them. Most countries cannot really afford them. I believe it took Montreal 35 years to pay back the debt. Fortunately, they happen only every four years. Perhaps, like many lavish events resembling Roman 'games' used to pacify the disillusioned masses, they need to be consigned to history so that we can all get our feet back on the ground and live within our means for a change.
In the meantime , Channel 7 gets the wooden spoon for the Games. For the sake of my wife, I have endured, for the past week, hours of the most boring sports there are: swimming, soccer etc, and missing out (apart from the odd few seconds if Australia won something) shooting, archery and other minor interests that we don't have shoved down our throats every day of the week. To see those, you have to get an app, and wipe out your monthly gigabyte allowance in no time flat. I can't wait for another peaceful 4 years, when programs will return to normal. I'll have you know the Olympic Games are held to celebrate my birthday, leap year, so get your cotton picking hands off it you lot.
Seriously I agree with ttbn, although the Greeks have proven a bit clumsy with money, after the last time, they most definitely know they can't afford, & probably are not silly enough to want the Olympics again let alone permanently. I must admit to loving the 3 day event coverage. I have never seen such great coverage of any horse event, but then If I never see another game of 7s, soccer, hockey, water polo, volleyball, table tennis, & a host of other stuff I'll consider it a bonus. The trick is of course, they keep you hanging on, waiting for anything you want to see, by not giving you a time table. I couldn't believe we were stupid enough to bid for & win the commonwealth games. It just shows the stupidity of politicians, particularly mayors & premiers when their egos are stroked. Yes, Crackup has nailed it. The entire post encapsulates the travesty of sportsmanship and moral standards among those who administer the Olympics, and the vast majority of fee for sport activities around the globe with FIFA being the obvious template for corruption.
Unfortunately Crackup’s assertion of endemic fraud in corporations and large sports administrative organizations is here to stay. But to cease a global games would impact the millions of rivulets that feed the whole right down to Little Athletics. But sport of itself and the rote of participating and training are positive character building tools for our youth. We can’t cut the arm off because of one gangrenous finger, we cut off a little piece of the finger........as we did with Sepp Blatter. Oh hail to the gods of Olympus and sweaty naked men .
Then let Nike, olive oil and gold futures fund the Greek games and all nations declare a military truce. Posted by nicknamenick, Sunday, 14 August 2016 6:27:11 PM

Christ, what a bunch of poe-faced wowsers.
Can't you enjoy and admire people putting everything they've got into some single-minded goal ? Aren't you inspired by such dedication ? Watching the women's marathon last night, I never dreamt how interesting it could be. For two and a half hours. Such gorgeous little bottoms too. . A young person (whether a “child” or “child or young person”) in all jurisdictions (except NSW) means a person under the age of 18 years. New South Wales requires mandatory reporting for a person under the age of 16 years.
For the current Olympic cycle, in order to compete in the 2016 Olympics, a gymnast must have a birth date before January 1, 2001. Better just stay with the males who are older and avoid abusing the 15 year old girls. Posted by nicknamenick, Monday, 15 August 2016 11:37:50 AM

Nick,
Well, that's what the stipulation is for. As for poe-faced wowserism, I rest my case. Joe Posted by Loudmouth, Monday, 15 August 2016 12:14:56 PM

Every morning I listen to 15 minutes of news on ABC radio 720 followed by 30 minutes of current affairs.
That stopped dead when the mind-numbingly boring Brazil boondoggle swept serious news and current affairs broadcasts from the air. Functional radio silence continues this week. Posted by EmperorJulian, Monday, 15 August 2016 12:37:05 PM

Hmmmm ...... I wonder if it's merely envy, that couch potatoes are antagonistic not only to effort but to any admiration for those who do put effort into some goal.
Perhaps it's also a fury and envy at the sight of close-to-perfect bodies compared to their own. Perhaps they are still pissed off that, throughout their junior primary years, they didn't get a Gold Star for everything, in proper recognition of their wonderful uniqueness - after all, their mums had rewarded them for everything, such as 'Look mummy, I do poos !' Or is it that they are terrified of growing older, past optimal Olympic age, that their saggy bits are only going to get saggier, and all those firm young bodies are a cruel reminder of their own irreversible sloth ? Nothing and nobody is perfect, but some come a hell of a lot closer than others, including these wonderful young people in Rio. Joe Posted by Loudmouth, Monday, 15 August 2016 1:08:36 PM

wimps..do we see anything like this ?
, athletes from any Greek city-state and kingdom were allowed to participate, although .. king Alexander I to participate in the games only after he had proven his Greek ancestry. Boxing ., hard leather with metal sometimes was used.. Bouts continued until one man either surrendered or died - however, the dead boxer was automatically declared the winner. . Greek geographer Pausanias wrote of a fight between Damoxenos and Kreugas which ended when Damoxenos jabbed Kreugas with outstretched fingers, piercing the skin and ripping Kreugas' entrails out of the body. . In pankration only biting and gouging were forbidden. One fighter would break an opponent’s fingers at the start of the match to force immediate surrender. Another fighter would twist opponents’ ankles from their sockets Posted by nicknamenick, Monday, 15 August 2016 1:45:16 PM

Hi Nick,
Yes, even the ancient Greeks were barely civilized, but at least their games at Olympia brought a temporary end to endless war between participating city-states. Aren't you glad that today's Olympics are so much more civilized, peaceful, each beautiful athlete a paragon of dedication and a model for our next generations ? Maybe back to topic :) Clearly, if every Olympics were held in Greece, international funds would be required each time, and for maintenance of venues in between. How would that work ? That raises the spectre of the United Nations, and all the politicking that that would involve. Unless one country was prepared to take on all the costs and hold each Games in its own territory ? Today's Aztecs are peaceful and don't rip out war-prisoners' hearts for the gods. But they are not called "Aztecs" today. It's dopey and not performance enhancing to call the games "Olympic", just as those car tyres are not the same as Olympic chariot wheels. The fraud is when the maidens light the flame for the torch when they are Greek Orthodox church and not worshippers of Zeus.
How about we commemorate Anzac Day with American uniforms , at US Arlington cemetery and play Yankee Doodle on the trombone with rap dancing? Posted by nicknamenick, Monday, 15 August 2016 5:32:12 PM

Hi Nick,
So, I take it that you're just another of the anti-sport wowsers then ? Joe Posted by Loudmouth, Monday, 15 August 2016 6:51:45 PM

Nah I'm keen on the stuff and admire top skill in anything ,and the endurance and extreme effort of athletic contest. Don't agree with calling it Olympic though. Spam , cheats, abuse , Olympic Games.

Nick,
Yes, I've listened or watched every internationalist Olympic Games since Helsinki, since Nurmi, Zapotek, Kuts, Betty Cuthbert, so many amazing athletes. If we could keep drug cheats out, like those from Russia and China for whom winning is everything no matter how, they would be even more wonderful. There's a program on the ABC tonight on the doping industry in East Germany, it should be very revealing. Joe Posted by Loudmouth, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 10:08:03 AM

If they do bring back fighting to the death and ripping out intestines , breaking fingers and dislocating ankles , then NO pain-killers , OK? It probably led to the Roman Colosseum and fighting against lions , gladiators and poms. Did they need pain-killers? no

According to some reports, the Commonwealth government spent $380 million on our Olympic team over the last four years. This might be an unpopular opinion, but we need to consider whether that money could be better spent.

I think that Olympics is overhyped and unnecessary. It's a waste of money, we could help poor people or kids.

I agree this topic. It is the time to change the place of Olympic. It need to get back the Olympic to Greece. Then everything will get faster than before. Some times it will be more advantages for the people to get their journey more colorful. Because there are some place like Tourist attractions in Malaysia will help people to enjoy their journey.

I think the Olympics has become a PC joke.
The fact that a man with a penis can win a women's 800m running event and the then news headlines call it a win for women, is where I throw my hands in the air. They love using sport to push political correctness. A win for women hey? Unless of course you were one of the competitors born with a vagina who had to take a lesser medal for all your hard training because a person born with a penis decided he identifies as and wishes to compete as a woman. I identify him as a person born with a penis. Simple. Go race with the men, you lowlife cheat. Posted by Armchair Critic, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 1:17:06 PM

The announcer stated words to the effect: "Usain Bolt has done it again! He is good, and nobody is "GOODER" than Bolt!"
Is this another example of the moronic masses that are pandering to the Olympic Games fiasco?
The critics are stating openly that the Games should never have been awarded to Brazil, as the cost to the people far outweighs the return, (which as always seems to financially benefit the rich and powerful), leaving the starving, hidden away masses of humanity to forage for a few crumbs of food to survive!
I think it is time to sack the Olympic Games Committee, for their BUNGLING and either return the whole Olympic Games back permanently to Greece, or do away with it all together?
The world seems to have lost sight of the real principle of athletes from various nations competing against each other for the pure glory of athletic achievement, rather than the disgraceful conduct of some of today`s Games competitors, criticizing, accusing each other of drug performance enhancement, all to gain that almighty Gold Medal, which in the Western World assures them of a bright and very prosperous future.
In essence the Olympic Games have become a monstrous money-making exercise, designed to boost the bank accounts of many that do NOT need it, at the expense of the taxpayers of the host country.
At the end of the day the poorer/poorest constituents have to pick up the bill, or suffer reduced services/infrastructure,...but when you have NOTHING what can you sacrifice?
