I heard him speaking to the media yesterday, and there are a few points of interest.
Firstly, I don't think he would be so popular, if we had popular major parties, because I do think a fair amount of his support has been gained through protest votes. He made a comment about provisional tax, which on principle I agree with because it's a cruel tax that often kills off small business as they get smashed if the have a good starting year, then get smashed even harder with PT, with the main problem being that it's against the law to borrow for tax bills. What he did suggest is that if the tax were deferred and paid afterbthe earnings, like company tax, then this woukd free up some 70 billion dollars, dollars which woukd then circulate through the economy. Well worth a look. The mining tax. Although he has a self interest in this, it's a ridiculous tax as the miners already pay their share plus, they generate millions by way of indirect taxes such as income, GST and payroll taxes, much of which simply wouldn't exist without mining. Of cause his agreement is subject to the government retaining the payment to orphans of soldiers. At $250,000 per year, it's a joke to think it's axing was even on the table. As for asylum seekers, it's my understanding that he wants to fund direct flights in to the country, then, if found to be genuine refugees, they stay, if not, they are flown home. I have no problem with that othe than to say, how do we pay for them and, surely we must fund our own needs NOT WANTS first. So in essence, I once again suggest his popularity has been brought about by the lack of support for the major parties, rather than by his own merrits. Dear Phillip,
Many people were asking this same question of the LNP prior to the last election - funny that! "What exactly are your policies?" booklets of "Motherhood Statements" don't count. Posted by Foxy, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 8:17:36 AM

Foxy,
"... booklets of "Motherhood Statements" don't count." Bummer about that. As far as I can see, apart from introducing freedoms to be a bigot - and taking away freedom of opinion (with a dobbing directive) for public servants, they haven't too much in the policy cupboard at all...except to undo everything that Labor did. Regarding Clive, judging by his interview recently in between telling the host to shut up, he made it clear that he knows diddling squat about climate science - so that should get him a few votes from the usual suspects. Palmers policy is to get back at the LNP.
Here in Qld, they refused to give him everything he wanted, after years of him supporting them. He is simply a naughty kid, who is throwing a tantrum because he was denied something he wanted, & saw as his due. Anyone who thinks he is on anyone's side except his own, is a dill, who has not done enough research. EG. My 22 year old daughter announced she had voted for him, because he is a successful businessman, so should be better than those others. When asked which others, she had no idea of who the "others" were. No protest there, just easily conned. Posted by Hasbeen, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 10:42:55 AM

Yes Has been, he has an axe to grind which is a real pity.
As for the daughter issue, I just wish they would do away with compulsory voting. Posted by rehctub, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 12:07:12 PM

I'm interested to know if any of the posters on this board support Palmer United, I've never come across anyone in real life who's even mentioned the party in a political discussion and I know nothing about it myself.

Rectub>>The mining tax. Although he has a self interest in this, it's a ridiculous tax as the miners already pay their share plus, they generate millions by way of indirect taxes such as income, GST and payroll taxes, much of which simply wouldn't exist without mining.<<
I beg to differ Butcher....The latest profit margin by segment in Australia reads this way: Mining 37% Professional and Technical services 24% Manufacturing 6% Retail 4% Mining in Australia employs 1.3% of the workforce and supports a further 4 jobs for every mining position. Mining industry profits in Australia are the largest of all the top 40 global mining companies...they make more profit here than anywhere else on the globe. So no Butch they do not pay their fair share and we are being screwed. Posted by sonofgloin, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 3:39:30 PM

Bit surprized that no one here bothered to google PUP policies
http://palmerunited.com/policies/ Not that I needed to as I knew he favoured letting the illegals in, so cross him off my list. Posted by Banjo, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 8:20:12 PM

Banjo I think he is a Rudd, with the difference that he has earned his own money.
I don't think he analyses things, & works out a suitable policy. I think he operates on "pings", just like Rudd did. Gets a thought, & a policy in a flash of "genius", & no matter how wrong, never revises. As a one man band he would be particularly dangerous with any power, as he would not be governed, or even tempered by a party room. Posted by Hasbeen, Thursday, 10 April 2014 10:03:12 PM

"I like the boy!" Anyone who splits the conservative vote can't be ALL bad. Palmer reminds me a bit of a latter day Joh Bjelke Petersen. Some may remember Old Joh, the fruit cake from the Nationals, who headed up one of the most corrupt governments Queensland has ever seen. The National's are very big on fruit cakes and pumpkin scones, they have thrown up some real past "doseys", must have something to do with all that Queensland sunshine. Palmer is reminiscent both physically and mentally of Russ Hinz, in fact he could well be the reincarnation of the long departed Russ!
Given my summation of Clive I can see why the conservatives would be falling over themselves to vote for him, Clive is their kinda guy! Posted by Paul1405, Saturday, 12 April 2014 8:23:08 AM

sonofgloin, of the industries and sectors you use as your comparison, which of them often risk billions in their quest for those profits.
Also, the amount of capital per profit would be huge in mining, so, I stand by my remark that they already pay their share of taxes. Forget profits, as the miners come a distant second to the banks in the field of profits V risks. Now if on the othe hand the royalties are too low, then fix them. Butch,
Being such an apologist for the likes of Gina Rhinoceros. What did she do for you? Send you a lump of iron ore for your birthday or something. The Mining Tax was designed to tax the mega profits of the super rich like Gina and provide from finite resources a share of that wealth to ordinary Australian. A true lost opportunity as mining exploits Australia's resources without reasonable penalty. The sycophantic and compliant Abbott along with other conservatives pander to these vested interests at every turn. It is an undeniable fact mining in Australia is the most profitable in the World. None of the hog wash about if we tax these poor devils, they'll pack up and start a new mine in Monte Carlo, or somewhere else, it ain't going to happen! Anyone who thinks money before the people, are as stupid as the situations their so use to:).........Mr palmer...just remember...if this planet dies...where are you going to spend your money:).....not too bright are you:)
So the point is..........well, I've made my case.... Kat Posted by ORIGINS OF MAN, Monday, 14 April 2014 1:28:39 PM

Paul, miners are pulling out of, or shelving local mines as we speak.
It stands to reason that if they have to cop the losses, then pay huge taxes if they succeed, what's the point. If anyone wants a bigger share of the profits, it's simple, buy shares. At least then those who buy shares are willing to share the risks as well as the gains. What's fairer than that? Posted by rehctub, Monday, 14 April 2014 1:46:24 PM

Quote from a recent article "Mr Palmer is opposed to offshore processing"
Exactly what does he think should happen to the tens of thousands of economic invaders.
Maybe he is looking for cheaper labor.
The MSM urgently needs to get to what he intends to do about and other issues.
Some issues are self explanatory like the mining tax, it will save him lots of money when repealed.
