SEPANG: MAS Airlines flight MH370 dropped to an altitude of 5,000 feet, or possibly lower, to defeat commercial (secondary) radar coverage after it turned back from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing route on March 8.

Investigators are poring over the Boeing 777-200ER's flight profile to determine if it had flown low and used "terrain masking" during most of the eight hours it was missing from the radar coverage of possibly at least three countries.

This is a particularly sad case, it is almost certain that the aircraft has crashed and finding the crash site is going to be incredibly difficult, and if the wreckage is not found we won't be able to determine the cause of the crash.

Terrorism makes no sense in this case, nor does suicide by one of the pilots, that just leaves us with pilot error or a malfunction of some sort.

You can't just hide a jet airliner on some out the way airstrip somewhere. The Americans claim their spy satellites are good enough to spot a single person on the ground never mind an aircraft with a 200 foot wing span.

This is the only rational explanation I have seen so far.

Well I guess this thread was always going to invite a wide range of “solutions” to the missing flight MH 370.

We have many possible scenario’s, guilty parties, speculation and conspiracy theories.

There is always a danger that the absence of fact leaves a vacuum for conspiracy theories to fill, which I personally think are just pain lazy.

Any rational analysis has to first answer the question “what” happened? If we know what happened we can move to “who” might have been involved, then to “why” they might have done it and finally “how’” they might have done it.

Conspiracy theories just short circuit the analysis, in fact worse than that, they start with the answers before the questions have even been defined, that’s why I think they are lazy thinking.

So many of our posters seem to mix up “known facts” with “reports”. I start on the basis that nothing is believable but try to fit reports with a reasonable hypothesis. These are as stated previously:

Mechanical/structural failure leading to catastrophic failure
High jacking by terrorists to destroy the aircraft and kill the passengers.
High jacking to attack Malaysian interests.
High jacking to ransom passengers and the aircraft
High jacking to secure the aircraft for resale to, or use by terrorist interests.

The first seems to be excluded by the fact that the plane flew on for some six to eight hours.

The second seems also excluded because of evasive actions taken did not result in the immediate destruction of the aircraft, likewise no attack on Malaysian interests took place.

This leaves only the last two possibilities, ransom or just stealing the plane for later use.

The plane has failed to emerge after over a week, leaving two possibilities, that all objectives failed due to crashing in some location en route or, that the plane landed within 48 hours at a destination yet to be determined.

The reports from the Maldives might endorse the “Somali” option however, until and unless the aircraft is “found”, the world will live in fear of possibilities too horrendous to contemplate.

For the media it is one of those stories that keeps on giving. TV makes the news.
