You raise some good questions. The most important thing is to question what is presented as fact. Information is not always solid, sometimes full of holes and self-serving motives.
Whistleblowers who were targeted after revealing information about the Iraq War stand as an example to what can happen when you are up against Executive power corrupted by powerful business interests. That is not to argue all aspects of government are corrupted but some will find it difficult to go against those who command greater influence. The campaign against whistleblowers like Wilkie, Manning, Kessing, Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson, Snowden and Manning are examples of punishments doled out to those who expose less than honourable behaviour by governments.
Iraq is a cautionary tale worthy of giving pause and some thought in assessing information carefully and fairly.
