runner,

Don't be so unassuming.

No-one does "hatred" better on OLO than you...especially when you give it your best shot to paste that vice on anyone and everyone who happens to disagree with you.

(Suck it up:)

Increase the GST to 15%
Collect it all not only 38% (kill the cash economy which has grown exponentially since the GST inception)
Place a 10% tax on unused land (Reduce or stop tax on used land)
Increase road tax to force rail usage.
Yes to your transaction tax definitely though didn't we once have one called stamp duty?
You know my friend who is on the second top tier of ATO management on $250,000 a year tells me his wage is too much really. He doesn't need it.
He also tells me that his department only collects 38% of the available GST because they really have no way of collecting it.
He also says that if they did collect it all the worker wouldn't have to pay income tax up to $80,000 a year income.

rehctub - Indonesia as at 2012 were estimated to be $ 20,730,000,000 in debt.

BUT while we give them MILLIONS in aid they have enough to buy helicopter gunships and missiles and other essential items.

Looks to me like rather than give them aid we subsidize there military.
If they spent money on there people there would be less for the military so we do it for them. (stuff needy Australians)

Chris, increasing the GST will hurt the poorest, as they require 100% of their income just to survive.

The stamp duty was nothing like a TT, as like every other tax, it could only be collected once.

Taxing unused land will deter developers from land banking, resulting in higher land prices, a move that will make housing even less affordable.

In my view the GST is a stupid tax, as it gets paid many times over throughout the trading process, only to be claimed back, a process that must cost millions, if not billions, and the only person that actually pays the tax for good, is the end user, which is often the ones who can least afford it, especially given that they pay this tax with after tax dollars.

As for a TT, it is a tax on money, not people, and that's the difference as it can be collected time and time again and if introduced it would be a huge boost to the economy from day one.
