anything you tell me,political or not, is ok with me. My husband took his own life 3 days after talking about being in Vietnam to a stranger. I am seeking answers and anything will help. I thank you for taking the time to reply and also for sending links.
In another conversation some months earlier he also mentioned to someone about the Ho Chi Minh Trail and observing and snipers.

Callie,

I am very sorry to hear that. Someone very close to me also killed himself and I know the pain of loss can be devastating. Suicide is such an impossible thing to make sense of. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Good luck.

By the time the Labor Government was elected in December 1972 there were only about 120 Australian troops in Vietnam - as training officers with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV). This team was made up of officers and warrant officers.

The decision to scale back Australia's combat contribution was made in 1970, and all Australian combat troops had been returned to Australia well before December 1972.

I may be wrong, and I feel your grief. But given your husband was 18 in 1974 it is unlikely he served in Vietnam.

My sincere condolences.

Dear CALLIE...

I too would like to offer my sincere condolences for your sad loss.

My understanding also, is there were very few Aussie troops remaining in South Vietnam, in the period to which you refer.

Given your late husband's age, it would be most unlikely that he would have received 'alloted duty' in country. However, anything's possible. Suggest you check with C.A.R.O at Victoria Barracks, they should be in a position to advise you properly.

For the record, I cannot abide ANY Politician from ANY political party !

Take good care of yourself.
