Neither the labor party or the liberal party will find balance.
One party is for big business and the other supposadly for the workers. It will not happen. Change is needed for this to happen. As Kevin Rudd said "Politics is about Power" So it seems that these party's have one interest and one interest only being in power for the liberal party or the labor party. you have a choice www.tapp.org.au Posted by tapp, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 10:12:48 PM

The theory in reducing tarrifs was that living standards in places like China would gradually increase to meet ours in a globally competitive environment. We reduced tarrifs for fear we might lose technological advances and become a back water of isolation.
The reality is this ,China has a great reservoir of cheap labour that will be around for decades and the world does not have enough resources and energy to raise their standards on masse to ours. This has been a flawed assumption of free trade proponents. I think that John Howard's IR reform has a long term aim of competing with places like China on their terms. We will all be losers if this eventuates. The level playing field does not and will not exist.John Howard said that he would not pick winners in raising tarrifs to protect certain industries. It is not a matter of picking winners but a matter of keeping viable industries here.Would John Howard let his grandchild compete against Ian Thorp in swimming and call this a level playing field?I think not. We are bleeding to death via our balance of payments deficit and creating a little America with huge pools of cheap poor labour is not the kind of Australia I want to see. Kevin Rudd's Trojan Horse - Industrial Relations
The Labor party have campaigned hard against the new Workchoice regime of the Federal Liberal party, insisting that they will rip it up and decentralise its power. Kevin's proposed changes to the unfair dismissal laws whereby employers with less than 15 employees have 12 months to dismiss their employees, and 6 months for those employers with more the 15 employees, does not give any job security to any National Australian worker. The Labor advertisments whereby a mother is told that she will be dismissed if she does not show up for work and has no baby sitter, clearly indicates the Trojan that the Labor party have handed Australian women, part time and casual workers. Labor is currently aware that business is in the grip of a Labour crisis, whereby they can console themselves, that an Employer would only want to keep a good employees. But as Kevin says, what's going to happen after the Resources boom? Conceded, strike action by ballot is taking away the power of Union executives and those who presume to represent it, and return power to the members. As we suspected, Labor will not change the Workchoice regime, but give it a new title at the cost to the Australian taxpayer. Kevin Rudd and the Labor parties strategy on vote analysis, is to gain the conservative business vote of the Liberal party to tip the scales in Labor's favour. Labor is willing to do so by continuing to serve Australian workers heads to business on a 6-12 month platter. Labor is already selling out on the Nuclear debate. Trojans. "The process for dealing with all unfair dismissal claims will also be
streamlined. Labor’s new industrial umpire will have local offices in regional and suburban areas and will be able to go to the workplace or any other agreed venue to resolve the claim. Claims will need to be filed quickly – usually within 7 days - and heard quickly. There will be no lawyers involved. Every endeavour will be made to resolve claims by discussion. If that can’t be done, the umpire will make a quick decision so the parties can move on." except from Kevin Rudd's press club speech. Just to back Bellys no lawyers post. Kevin Rudd will do whatever the unions want in the end. Whatever he may say this small unrepresentative band of persons is still wields the power behind the ALP throne.
The South Australian government has been so worried about the diminishing power base of the unions that they recently returned a million dollars of taxpayer funds to the union coffers for an "occupational health and safety campaign" run by the union movement. A little thought will tell anyone that unions could not possibly know about occupational health and safety issues in all work places. What are the funds really for then? To boost union membership. It is also interesting to note that Kevin Rudd is having a pow-wow with Rupert Murdoch while in the US advising everyone that he is the next Prime Minister. He need not worry. Murdoch has advised the press that they must continue to laud Rudd and lambast Howard as the latter did not give him everything he wanted. Posted by Communicat, Thursday, 19 April 2007 2:59:00 PM

It is an interesting insight into Kevin Rudds psyche over "Sun Lies False Dawn Affair."Kevin Rudd totally denied that he was complicit in this deception. He even heavied the Telegraph over their story to a point of veilled threats. When the emails led to Kevin being a co-conspiritor he totally changed his demeanour and was apologetic but did not confront his own shortcomings.
Kevin has failed in demonstrating good judgement, being truthful and being respectful of our ANZAC traditions. This is not a good look for future Prime Minister that will lord over important decisions such as IR.He seems to be making policy on the run in a very adhoc way. Once we would not have seen issues such as sunrise blown up as it has been.
issues such as this are nothing less than attempts to destroy or weaken one man not related in any way to policy. And it back fires badly. IR too far more than we wish to see ,even arjay can see it workchoices in its present form is a beast that eats some. It is my honestly held view that John Howard will change this law in very big ways very soon. Government and power alone matter to this man, he well could change a few policy's not shared by the Australian voters before this poll. It will be in vain. A long term union wish and wrong in my view union wish, last on first off, entrenching lack of talent highlights Howard has been around too long. Its time for talent in this government, Australia needs it to be strong in opposition. Posted by Belly, Thursday, 19 April 2007 11:35:54 PM

It is the scarcity of money that keeps an econmy, lean mean and productive.China has bought enormous amounts of our resources, yet still the balance of payments blossoms to a deficit, yet we still have this denial by both major parties that this movement towards free trade is not destroying our industries.Prices in my industry have not gone up in the last 7yrs.I have absorbed the GST and all the increases in insurances, rent and Govt charges, regulation, taxes. There are many other small businesses in the same predicament. This is why many just close down or move off shore.
I can only assume that both Liberal and Labor pander to big business and are quite happy to enslave our population to a subsistance culture.Once a business moves off shore the knowledge and skills are gone for ever.It will take decades to get them back. I think that the Coalition have finally realised that we will continue to bleed to death if something is not done soon. They won't reverse their policy on the continued reduction of tarrifs so workers in this country will have to work harder for less.It does not just apply to blue collar workers. With the expansion of the internet white collar jobs will be outsourced also. A Globalised world with shrinking resources, energy,no borders nor rules will indeed be a very cut throat environment, that will see big business and the wealthy have absolute power. We desperately need a new independant and honest political party. Posted by Arjay, Saturday, 21 April 2007 7:23:13 PM

IR laws are not fair.
Kevin Rudd's background in promoting Chinese businessmen to doing business in Australia, hardy allow him to speak on IR Laws. When China was gearing up to flood the Australian market with cheap manufactured goods. It was Kevin Rudd allowing child labor factories to export their goods to Australia. Hardly the type of person you would pick as your IR law expert or even a Prime Minister. He will sell out Australian workers down the track and bankrupt Australian manufacturing just for his own ego. The latest news that he was appointed as Rupert Murdoch's Ambassador to Australia highlight my concerns. Posted by BROCK, Sunday, 22 April 2007 1:25:54 PM

It will never be easy to balance IR law or trade while we would prefer an Australian manufacturing industry.
One maybe protected by tariffs, would we welcome high tax's against our primary products from other country's to protect their industry? America plays with us like a mouse to do so, what if the world did? IR what do you want from new laws? a total return to pre workchoices? Is that possible? or wise? Could John Howard ever be defeated by either as a policy? Is it just a chance Australia needed some reform? Getting the balance right indeed is the trick. Its not totally my wanted outcome but its not workchoices . I think we again and again in the Labor /union movement need to remind ourselves what is achievable. That clearly is what voters want. We have lived in denial for too long.In order to compete with countries like china, the choices are these, maintain a level of tarrifs comeasurate with the unfair low wages of third world countries,or lower our living standards to that of theirs. We cannot have it both ways no matter what the pollies say.
There are not enough resources and energy on the planet to equal what we in Australia enjoy now.Do we let big business and Govt determine our destinies or smell the reality and make a stand? It is not only manufacturing blue collar jobs that are under threat, any job that can be outsourced overseas will go.The rebellion of work choices is just a symptom of a much wider malaise. Kevin Rudd has gone out of his way to appease the doubts of big business/Govt in the US in order to get the nod to assume the mantle of power.Given his recent performance,I don't think he gives a toss about the well being of ordinary Australians. The real power plays happen behind closed doors, while the rest is just smoke and mirrors to amuse the masses. Posted by Arjay, Sunday, 22 April 2007 10:22:38 PM

arjay, the independent and honest political party is all around you: it's the electorate of australia, speaking through direct elections and citizen initiated referendum.
the political gang you are dreaming about, on the other hand, can be found next to the fairy godmother you still haven't stopped wishing would show up to slip you a lolly when you're low: "in yer dreams, mate". Posted by DEMOS, Monday, 23 April 2007 4:04:10 PM

Kevin Rudd proposal that the States all sign over their legislative powers for IR and then he will enact legislation to cover all Australians in the private sector other then those employed by the states or the Commonwealth simply will not work as constitutionally, any Federal law must apply to everyone.
No matter what the High Court of Australia stated in its judgment it was totally wrong and those interested can always check out some material that is on my blog at http://au.blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-ijpxwMQ4dbXm0BMADq1lv8AYHknTV_QH. and my website http://www.schorel-hlavka.com. I have no doubt that the High Court of Australia will end up overturning its decision and if that occurs who will protect the employers against thousands upon thousands of unfair dismissal laws, where they acted upon the understanding that WorkChoices legislation was legally valid. And, what about the thousands of employees who were robbed of appropriate penalty payments now that the legislation is found to be unconstitutional. It is going to be a legal minefield and the blame can only lie with Howard and his cohorts as they should have been aware that they were deceiving the High Court in the litigation. Still, Howard then retires with millions of dollars from Consolidated Revenue (taxpayers) and everyone else will suffer. Is this the kind of politicians we really want? John Howard on the other hand needs to make work place agreements more balanced since it does give the upper hand to the employer particularily with semi-literate workers under unscrupulous bosses. It has not been well planned and the Coalition will lose the next election if they don't see the potential for this imbalance. The public are not stupid.
