The Conroy's internet "safety net" fortunately seems to have been ditched, but now we have another assault on internet privacy by Roxon. The problem with this scheme is that it is so ridiculously easy to hide all traffic from prying eyes, that there are entire businesses catering for this. For $5 per month you can get a VPN IP address that will flag you as being in which ever country you choose (great for buying music etc at US prices instead of Aus prices), encrypt your traffic, and make you completely immune from snooping by any intelligence organisation, or commercial organisation trying to prevent piracy.

I am not trying to promote piracy or terrorism, simply showing how easy and cheap it is to completely foil the internet filter or record keeping that Roxon is trying to promote.

Presently, only a few people use this service, but once it is known that the ISPs are keeping records for the purpose of possible prosecution, anyone that has any intention of doing anything nefarious will simply operate off the grid, leaving the only people caught in the net being everyone else. This renders the entire exercise worthless.

One of the biggest threat to our children is the immoral standards set by the adults in Parliament. This ranges from adultery to straight out lying. Usually those with the worse tract records then adopt some environmental or other 'moral' cause to cruscade on.

I'm suffering from privacy deprivation syndrome, not paranoia.

The internet is the last bastion of anonymity, but already people are using IP addresses and history to provide differential marketing and pricing. For most this is not an issue. For those that prefer not to be profiled, there are many options, and benefits.

I do find that using a VPN enables me to buy things from overseas at prices that are discounted for locals. Movies, music etc are possible at prices only for US residents if you change your IP address. For example Netflix for $3 p.m. is available in the US only and is a huge source of movies, and you can sign on for a fraction of the cost of Local pay tv providers.
