He's not John Steward or Colbert and he's just not funny, or intellectually equipped to take the piss out of Australian politics. But to be fair, it would take a comic genius to take the piss out of Australian politics and affairs these days because it (politics and politicians) are doing a hell of a job of satirizing themselves and the issues they put up. It’s like reality TV, only the contestants are those we have elected into office. They (politicians) simply don't make any room for satire and comedy to exist as a parallel universe of commentary. The Chaser was perhaps as good as one gets in terms of taking the piss out of politicians. Micallef is no doubt a talented comedian, but his brand of humour is out of kilter with what is necessary to make the mundane humorous. I think HG and Roy would have been a much better choice, they come with their own brand, we know what to expect and its far better than Micallef's weak attempts at irony and his clumsy rubber chook jokes.

Sorry but....

I thought that this was the funniest ABC program since Q&A. We used to say that a nation is not mature until it can laugh at itself. Why should it be any different with public broadcasters?
When the ABC can mock itself it will have arrived in the modern world. Sadly, if we cannot laugh at Shauns world,we have not arrived.

Agreed Spindoc.Shaun was hilarious and witty.Shaun unlike most ABC shows took the piss out of Labor and the Coalition.

Rainer is a staunch Labor supporter. This is why he does not find it funny.

thanks arjay, that's the best line I've heard all week, lol, me a staunch labor supporter!, my mates are pissing themselves here too when i read it out, when they asked me who it was that accused me of such treachery, i said it was someone who voted blindly for John Howard, more laughter

<< I thought that this was the funniest ABC program since Q&A >>

Haaahahahh!

Actually Spindoc, Q&A does have some quite exquisite funny moments, made all the better by being spontaneous on a live program.

Yeah I think Shaun Micallef doesn’t do too badly!

as for chaser
how low they have fallen

so much on abc is junk
[like what is cooking so neglected abc needs to do it too
and as for sport...as news..[your joking right]two apes banging each other..might make enter-taint-meant..but its hardly worth taking half the news

10 minutes sport
10 minutes news..its a joke
news 24 covereing the senet and blair
thats great...but how come we cant shunt sports/gambling/foodbooze
off the new news channels..and have more news channels..

[like broadcast everything that govt does[read new laws/acts..legislation plus its debaits]..thats REAL NEWS..not some wankhero sports nut..i never heard of belting another mindless robot..or getting a score or more

i want real info/news..not just commentary
and enter taint meant..slap stick should never be on abc

that python idiot comes to mind
when yes minester is just fine

les pattrerson on last nights qanda
best tv for a long time[hes lol doing a cooking spot..in his show]

or rather les patty son is
his hygene rules of the kitch
should return kitch back to the kitchen..[on stage kitchen rage]

which reminds me[abc is supposed to fill gaps..
other free broadcastrers tend to ignore]..what we dont got enough MURDER AND MAYHEM..on free to air..

that abc needs to broadcast that vile..principle
further upon the stagnment police.murder/mayhem..media waters

abc
means focusing on the basics
not d to z

Rainier,

Cult Attribute No 23. “Members exhibit a dramatic loss of spontaneity and sense of humor”. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Ludwig,

Yep, Q&A do have their moments but like so many ABC programs their humor is based on sneering elitism, which is occasionally funny but mostly cringe worthy. I think this has also infected other programs such as the Project. Hughes should go back to the comedy festival and Charlie Snickering should retire.

Shaun’s humor is also very quick and multi targeted, much closer to Monty Python.

After reading these posts I made a point of watching Micallef a few days ago. The remarks on the show were both factual & witty. No wonder the lefties are upset. he hits the nail on the head. It's a welcome dose of common sense.

I thought Welcher & Welcher was funny, his other work I can take or leave, Micallef's attempts at "straight" work leave me cold, he's a great improviser, his skits on Thank God You're Here were memorable.
