Sun Metals is Korean. My mate was the Safety Officer for Sun Metals also an Electrician when they built the factory.
Sun Metals original agreement with the then NLP Government was that they would build a Mini-City out behind Partington where Korean workers lived. The workers would be flown in to Australia, taken directly to the mini-city, bypassing Customs. They had to stay in the mini-city at all times & work on the site for 3 months at a time. everything would be provided for them, accomodation, entertainment, recreation, etc. They would be payed Korean wages.
This all fell through when a severe boycott was introduced. Sun Metals relented & employed Australians, BUT, they gave Australians a hard time. Not by their standards though. My mate was alwas telling me that he had a hard time explaining to the Korean bosses that you couldn't treat people like that in Australia. They were also not familiar with Australian Safety Standards & wanted to bypass them all the time. A few people were killed on site.
My mate tells me that the Korean supervisors still give Australians a hard time to try to get them to leave. They want to be able to say that they can't get Australians to work there so they have an excuse to import workers from Korea.
