Headlines in NSW talk of Radio Active spill, a road work site.
I was there, have in my post history spoke about it, here and in another long gone forum.
4 December 1980 Bago Turn ,a small green van and semi trailer crashed.
Driver of the car/van died.
My road crew was called within one hour after it took place.
A construction crew,traveling to work,had taken over traffic control and sent for us to do traffic control.
Another few came to assist the clean up, until the wrecks had been removed.
I spent the day there.
Holding a stop go bat and then up to my chin loading the next truck.
To understand the words to come,how a trade union delegate could not question this you need to understand I was a casual, had already been laid off once,and Even a glimpse of union activity got you sacked..
I had recently seen 5 kids in my care and mum hungry.
That truck had three main items food Radio active drums I thought two, and poison white powder poison.
Everything was covered inn a white dust.
Including me,always a get into it worker I, driven by hope for a full time job threw myself in to it.
By mid afternoon rain came, my arms and face burned as the white powder became acid.
We demanded blood tests,we got them,after true insistence from Union driven by me.
We never got the results ever.
Years after a fish kill big one, just down steam in a lake Dick Smith offered to spend $100.000 to clean it up!
He was told it was not there,no radioactivity? No not in my view but if you test for coal in a sandy beach?
Years after, my third turn to work by now permanent,I demanded those blood tests,no records of the event.
I Found in the 1990s the minutes of that health and safety meeting, I saw this answer to my request he is still alive so it could not have been too bad

While mistakes take place,if one single word I say here is a lie I am worthless.
In the weeks after that event we, against hard pressure and ridicule forced those blood tests.
We never got those results, the two young police officers took sick and I think both, never worked much again.
My attempts to get those results from the health and safety group met with more ridicule but no results.
After my appointment, as one of 6 state RTA union delegates to the peak body my attempts to get them met with?
We can find no records of the event!
Even on producing my records of that health meeting!
Today I found out, the two police interviewed on ABC radio said DDT and Tolulol!
And confirmed my fears and memory, two not the one shown on TV last night, Radio active containers came on that load, indeed one lay cracked and open, in front of me for hours.
We buried it by that road,no more than 50 meters from the smash site.
Trees half a century old and more died,every one of them.
The fish kill did take place.
The site, known to the RTA was test drilled before tenders had even been called.
I FULLY informed the firm I thought would win the job of its existance danger and place.
The police victims had been told NOT TO SAY ANYTHING SHUT THEIR MOUTHS.
My work mates died of cancers.
I ran a state wide list of cancer victims and presented it to? the RTA peak body, no results, even today no one will tell the truth what was the result of those tests what was on the load.
How could white powder flowing in the wind be dug up and removed.
A look at the evasiveness taking place, pretending they do not know where it is is sickening,conspiracy? you betcha!

Well first you need to understand the culture of NSW country work in 1980 and the culture of the then DMR.
It operated as many Fiefdoms, an Engineer after his usual 18 months then move on work plan got his kingdom.
He inherited foremen , like himself good and bad, even ugly.
They had control and large work forces, more knocking on the door for a job.
We road workers? apart from the formans sons son in law and family? disposable throw aways.
A shadow still existed,from the days a worker who had zero chance of getting a job any other place, got one FIRST!
It was about to change, soon 8.500 state road workers would become 2.000 today it would not be one thousand.
But a country town Foreman, even one known to drink more than one bottle of scotch a day,at work, owned you.
So there is the reason we never could uncover the truth.
It is culture, No matter the impacts, to cover up for a mate, that Foreman existed, he was transfered not sacked, that was/is the culture.
If it was not? 8.500 would still work on those roads employed and delivering .

OUG good morning, well both police officers named them selves this morning on ABC radio.
Afraid I got heated here, yet again.
We see conspiracy theory's every day, and most are constructed lies.
Here is a real one, every word true.

One of those police, today for the first time, told us his wife was advised to terminate her pregnancy, on ABC radio, as a result of his exposure.
Consider this,the load, in 1980 was Chinese food dry squid, candied nuts tined fruit those containers, and said today, news for the first time to me, DDT and Tulol.
Every day mixed with the lunacy of conspiracy's we hear of such as this.
Just maybe we are not safe in any hands if covering it up is easier than fixing it.
My Doctors visit was scheduled for today, a month ago,to get result of blood tests.
That is my illness in the blood,we Doc and I have faced wrong diagnosis often cancer the lot, I have Barma Forest Virus, but some thing is wrong IN my blood.
Today we both confronted the view it well could be that single day at work, all those years ago that is my problem.

To be tested and not be given the results? How much regard for people would that suggest? About as much as a lab rat I would think. Disgusting.

Nothing really surprises anymore Belly. The fact that you never got your blood results is just another example of why there needs to be greater responsibility and accountability for those not only in government but in the corporate sector.

Hope you get to find out soon. You can always put in an FOI request regarding the earlier incident and any other historical records. Might be worth a try.

You had to be there!
No out sider, one who did not work in such a place for some time would believe it.
I firmly think given a chance Government endeavors can do as well or better than any contractor.
But that a deliberate sabotage, at every level stands in the way.
Some of those regional managers again few,stood out as good managers, they usually the ones who left or ended up marginalized.
This whole event was under the control foreman to every layer of management, of power freaks.
Lacking ability and that is sad, but determined to be in control.
I knew those now dead,know some ill still living.
I have a lot to thank yesterdays DMR/RTA for, it gave me good wages, a result of hard work and commitment.
But todays RTA? it treats the last generation of workers well but undermines them.
Contracts often costing very much more than they did for worse work out comes , and pure lip service to O H X S.
This matter will be swept under yet another carpet, headlines talk of no radio activity.
And that is true, in my view it was never left there.
But pretending they do not know what is was, I have shown here,where it is, they test drilled it, and testing for something they know is not there?

I am not shocked at what happened to you. I like you is an 'old fart' LOL who started work in 1972. Joined the AMWSU straight away as soon as I came out of 'my time'. was a closed shop anyway, not much choice. Was union delo, on Works Committee, very hard left etc, followed a long family tradition of union, father and grandfather strong union.
Places where the union was strong pay and conditions were far better than non union shops. Conditions in my time were far better than in the 'Old Mans' time and his were better than 'Pops' time. We today owe those old blokes so much for what they fought for and won. If workers today had to endure the pay and conditions of yesteryear they couldn't join the union fast enough. There are some around today who think the 'boss' just handed out the benefits they enjoy. What they don't realise is, the boss, given half a chance, is still working hard as ever to take away pay and condition. And who said we don't need unions. Wish you the best of luck.

These days, not much is left, near 400 tonnes of soil contaminated by petroleum was taken on a hundred plus road trip t o be isolated and cleaned.
Once roadside holes hide much even just rubber and burnt truck.

This link may well have been from twenty sources, even a believable one.
This one is not, believable that is.
Let me tell you if the site coordinator cares about that proposed dump she would never dare say so to these folk.
It is of use however,see the radio active part is highlighted, but unlikely to play even a minor roll if any.
It most probable only affected those there that day.
Not buried on site not a single chance.
But it has done its job tests prove what I knew it was is not there.
As a result of those tests we know no land mines have been found, no toxic cup cakes .
We do not however know why Generations! yes true, of DMR/RTA local area managers, and head office drones hid, from me and my workmates,the people around and using Lake Cathy.
Those blood test results,the nature of the contamination, hence fish kill.

But was watching the recovery of the third car, think it was me standing along side in singlet and stubbys.
We did not get uniforms in those days.
Now I truly do not think ANY radio active stuff was buried, I understand half life and all that.
But even knowing, seeing one container opened I think that was the only opportunity for ANY EXPOSURE.
Now that site person was talking in a way to say as little as possible.

For those who know the Pacific highway, O Sullivan's Gap, the scene of many deaths tragic ones.
Two trucks smashed on a corner on the Northern side.
Gypsy Camp it was known as pre and post war road workers gave it that name, they lived road side in tents and sheds while constructing the road.
White powder all over the bush and road, two of the drums on that load PANICKED the police.
I was part of a crew that stopped all traffic, two crews each taking sleep breaks in trucks 26 hours straight.
EPA or similar came in space suits! every one on site had to be dressed that way, after first hour as warnings read and enforced.
A CREW, RTA, SOME who lived and worked in the subject of the thread, DID IT AGAIN!
So dangerous was the UNKNOWN TO US, substance the final clean up!
*consisted of remaking the road*
Digging it up, good road, re laying, and HAD TO USE UNION POWER to get blood tests!
NEVER GOT THE RESULTS!

About 145 klm south of first ? how many on the full length of road.
How much remained in the bush? how much ran down that very steep hill?

A concern here, not that the soil was given away.
That is standard stuff, of benefit to both road maker and the receivers, normally.
The costs of road transport,very hight to extremely so, are the first benefit.
This was trucked close to site,a cost saving of thousands.
Second, for sure under some RTA road foremen, unavailability of such places ,saw rubbish put in road fills with the expected results.
It is almost sure, this fill went into tree changers and small local family farms, to fill depressions,top dress and fix internal farm roads.
About, an educated guess 25, 14 ton loads would have found their way from this spill.
Hundreds of no danger from the whole project.
The depth of the excavation ,to me at least, I have seen it, seems to show the burial has led to contamination at a lower depth than we buried it, seepage.
So maybe now the worst is on these property's.
Fruit, exotic animals, I could not guess what Else is involved.
Just maybe these new victims will get better results than those dead work mates of mine.
I doubt it.

It is evident some of my former workmates are reading this.
Phone calls e mails tell me this.
I how ever am no longer an officer of the union.
Have no legal right to act on our behalf.
I ask those who are to act on their own behalf,contact my replacement direct.
While tests are not finished it is very clear, to me, all the top soil removed from above the site and down hill, is contaminated.
However, have no doubt,the tests will be done on soil from up hill, not in the water table, and not contaminated!

It would be just and important, that that such incidents involving the abrogation of responsibility by Gov't be exposed, and that victims of such dereliction be both admonished and compensated.

I would like to talk to a couple of *sand baggers* a term used in radio that is used to describe those hiding, said to be behind a wall, of sand bags.
Seeing,hearing all that goes on but taking part only to be critical.

I ask others who know nothing of this to consider just what I have said, you MUST NEVER trust governments to tell the truth in such matters lies cost less than clean ups.

Heard others on the radio today on this subject.
Read the headlines telling me the whole thing is a fraud.
That hurt.
I recruited almost every worker on this site to my union on the first project they did in this area.
Some including foremen, had been my mates and members on other sites.
On the day this event took place the NSW then DMR had no CFMEU members who worked even near this site.
As is usual one official from that union, once my opposite, works in that area.
As usual, at the first sniff of a safety issue, an invasion of other officials of that union flys to the smell.
My union is working QUIETLY to get to the bottom of it, I am helping.
I like the local bloke from that union, if his membership on this site out numbers ours I will be surprised.
But this issue, generations of dead workers, yes dead early.
Are in danger of being covered by press unconvinced that rat bag actions on this site are other than what they are, product of the southern end of a north bound BULL.
However remember my tales of skin problems? 3 have the same problem.

Talking to Delegates, the top ones selected by their mates to over see the running of the union.
Scrutinize every dollar spent every action taken, no HSU there.
A call came, the *radio active site* has been closed down!
All types of claims are being made, silly, wild, concerning claims.
Parr for the course,one group, thugs and mugs, feeds on it.
And contaminates the whole union movement.
A victim? of these extreme claims?
Me! My mates, dead and alive! those sick with undiagnosed illness, that includes me, so very many wrong and false diagnosis's, all I can say?
I have a blood illness of unknown origin.
Those two single drums,of radio active what ever LEFT THE SCENE!
One was steel and unbroken.
As seen that night ON NATIONAL TV the other was plastic screw top, it had been both broken and the TOP UNSCREWED!
It too LEFT THE SITE, was not buried.
Some contamination may have taken place, but why did the over 20 of us more closely involved not get sick too.
A lesson has been learned here, my thoughts truth would be the first victim, it has been from that day December 4 1980, it has again been put in that hole and covered up.
Remember, nothing could have removed almost all that ten tonne of white powder except the rain over 32 years that took it via water courses in to lake Cathy.

OUG yes I tried, last night I was awarded life membership of my union.
I had served it from my 16th year as delegate or official.
But during the ceremony it was stated that I drove two seminars on the subject of work place related deaths, as delegate.
Coal tar, a known Cancer causer was once an every day used product for RTA workers and their contractors.
I put together, twice,a statewide list of early deaths due to cancers.
It was state wide and long.
My branch ran the seminars, sponsored by the industry's big players.
Only the RTA did not ever cooperate, it payed lip service, but no more.
I fail you in not explaining my last post.
Another union has mirrored my early campaign way back in the 1980,s.
Then, documentary evidence exists still, a doctor diagnosed radioactive poisoning for two.
And chemical poisoning for others.
In state Parliament, I quoted the documents, RTA and government pilloried that doctor.
Even bringing up his speeding while driving record? to discredit him!
IN STATE PARLIAMENT!
Well this current re born issue,has seen the same.
Victims said to be contaminated by? the same chemicals, 5 different ones.
And THEIR DOCTOR is being subjected to the same rubbishing.

Believe it or not another phone call about this in the middle of my last post.

I no longer am a union official, no longer welcome in investigating this.

Belly, 20 years of my working life was spent in 1 large company, which had a very strong union AMWSU, ETU etc about 6 different unions on site. I was strong UNION, I was rep for the Engineers on the Works Committee for about 4 years, it was a closed shop, and the unions were very active, winning the best pay and conditions around, only second to the oil industry. We forced the company to be very safety minded, however in those 20 years 3 men died due to work related accidents.
There were investigations of course, but one thing which to this day can't never work out is why the manager who was clearly culpable in the last death got off scott free. In my mind there was a major cover up by Industrial Relations as they were called then, in that case, I had a very heated argument with our convener, as I had been approached by the mans family, I knew him personally, who wanted answers as to who was responsible for their Dads death, and why he had to die at the age of 62. I was basically told to keep out of it and leave it alone the convener as much as said it was not union business, which I thought was a load of crap.
p/s When ever an inspector came around, and the company knew well in advance he was coming, there would always be a pre-inspection tidy up. When the inspector was leaving his car boot would be well stocked with company product, in those days that was par for the course, look after the inspector. If they went to the 'shoe factory' they didn't go home 'bare footed'.
