IF about CREDIT this advert would not be so annoying, however is about DEBIT account transactions, the advert reads :

It doesn’t cost any extra to have a [Brand Removed] Visa Debit card. All you need is a [Brand Removed] transaction account. If you're aged 16 or 17, your parent or guardian needs to be a joint account-holder.

Why prevent 16yr olds from having a DEBIT card to spend their own money ?

Why do 16yr olds need permission to DEBIT spend their own money ?

In theory at least, DEBIT cards do NOT allow transactions without covering funds

polpak,
I'd imagine it would be an eye-opener & even educational for some youngsters to learn that they need money up front before buying. No covering funds, no goodies. simple !

Our son has earned his own money since 16 and, now at age 20, he actually has some money saved, only because we would not allow him to have his own account. He has one, but can't withdraw without our approval.
funny thing is, he now thanks us for going that extra mile, copping the abuse along the way.

Maternal age and maturity age can often be worlds apart.

Oh, and in many instances it's illegal for minors to purchase some things. The internet makes this possible.

Vicarious liability arises under common law and statute so superiors retain responsibility for the acts of their subordinates.

Degree of responsibility needs be clear for all, where exist legal, statutory restrictions.

Are such restrictions merely historical whims from superiors, elders, managers of bank/finance corporations, or others ?

Problems exist from lack of clarity, ambiguities as to where liberties, restrictions, and liabilities, are determined to apply.

Should society strive to ensure passage from child to youth, then youth to adult, at specific ages to be recognized in more formal manners, so lines of responsibility, accountability, and opportunities, clearer ?

Agree far to many 16+ are yet to learn how to manage their own money.

Is this due lack of opportunity thus experience ?

Does this result from elders retaining control over to much for to long ?
